Darlie Toothpaste

Do any of you use Darlie Toothpaste?  Do you remember what it used to be called?

This is what Darlie Toothpaste looks like now:

Notice the generic dude in a top hat with bright, shiny, white teeth.

This is how I remember "Darlie" Toothpaste as a kid:

I know!  Isn't that shocking!

I'm appalled that I didn't realize how racist it was when I was a kid.

Anyway, sometime in the 1990s Colgate bought "Darkie" and released a commercial ushering in the new era of Darlie Toothpaste.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM9C2esCG24

Can you believe that it took until the 1990s before they changed the name?

Its Chinese name, however, is still the same:  "黑人牙膏"  -  Black Man Toothpaste.  I have a question for native Chinese speakers.  Does its Chinese name sound as racist as it does in English?

PS. In case you're wondering there is also....

Update:  I just found this photo.  I guess they made marbles too.

Also, according to Wikipedia:

"The Chinese name of the brand, "黑人牙膏" (in English, "Black Man Toothpaste"), has not changed; a Chinese-language advertising campaign reassured customers that "Black Man Toothpaste is still Black Man Toothpaste". This is because the term "黑人" does not have any negative meaning in Chinese. The phrase 黑人() in Chinese is a general term for persons of African descent."

I remember that too, in fact, I also remeber Arsenio Hall commenting on the "darkie" toothpaste during a segment of his talk show (way back when it was still on the air) ...

Yeah I don't think this brand was sold anywhere other than in Asia. I guess that's why it took so long for them to change names.

lol i think chinese ppl just think that all blk ppl look alike and that coz of their darkcomplection makes their teeth look brighter and more white... so some one came up with the great idea of thte brand... just trying to think how a chinese person would when they came up with the idea...

My Grandpa said to me once out of nowhere - and very matter of factly - that mosquitos never bite black people, as the mosquitos can't see them... WTF gramps FTW!

Well, no surprise. There's still the Aunt Jemima brand syrup showcasing the Mammy persona in North America even to this day.

If it was black ghost, it would be pejorative. Thankfully, it isn't. Aunt Jemima was significantly changed a few years ago; she looks different than she used to. Colgate only changed because Procter & Gamble made this an issue, not out of philanthropy but as a business strategy to harm Colgate, after Colgate bought Hawley and Hazel. P&G were behind the 'expose'; otherwise it would probably be the same today. Eddie Murphy talked about it on Letterman in the 80s. The original Chinese 'inventor' (?) had been to the US in the early 1900s and saw Al Jolson in blackface ,and thought it made teeth look whiter. He asked what a person like that was called, and at that time such a word was sadly in common usage. Anyone remember the Bubble Sisters from Korea a few years ago and their use of blackface?
