This summer has been huge for movies. When the economy is down people seem to escape at the movies…Movies have made a huge impact on my life…as a kid my imagination was nurtured through them. I have to give credit to my pops…he was a huge movie buff …he didn’t have the most sophisticated taste in films.  But he knew what he liked.  Every so often pops would take us to a double feature at the drive-in…One drawback was that we had to wait a few months after the movie was released to enjoy this perk. By the time I saw the film I heard the story line a hundred times.

Somehow how mom would alter our movie going experience. Funny thing is she didn’t even like movies. Til this day, I think she is the only person that thinks Elvis movies are great.  Elvis movies and the Ten Commandments.  That’s her idea of great cinema. When mom came to the movies with us... She was like Kim Jong il.

    1. No buying popcorn.
    2. No buying drinks
    3. No buying anything!

Now I don’t know about you, but isn’t half the experience of going to movies the buttery popcorn a cold refreshing coke, with some delightful milk duds.  Sure it is! But mom brought her own snacks. To her credit she did try, she actually bought a popcorn maker. But it was used and didn’t work well. So the popcorn was always a little burnt or under cooked.  She didn’t use butter, she used cooking oil. It wouldn’t have been so bad if she didn’t put the popcorn in a big black garbage bag. It was a little much. We never had iced cold Pepsi’s either… it was usually a 2-liter of Shasta. Warm….coffee cups….no straws.

Even with all these Kim Jong IL rules…Pops turned  the other cheek, he never argued or got upset. He loved mom to death… He knew it was mom’s way of taking care of the family.

But one night pops had enough… I call it the “Mad Max”night. There was a double feature of Mad Max movies… It was Sunday night…mom starts to make the burnt popcorn and put chocolate milk in tupper wear…by 7pm we were off . We must of  been a mile away from the entrance when mom tells pops to pull over so she can get in the trunk.  Why the trunk you ask?  So she didn’t have to pay the extra 2 dollars. Pops actually argued and said it was embarrassing.  Mom yelled about how irresponsible he was…I could tell pop’s was pissed. This crossed the line. The movie line… Mom got her way and her free admittance to the drive-in. We pulled into our space…. Pops told my sister and I to follow him…we went straight to the concession stand…the glorious …buttery aroma-d stand of concession delight. We bought everything we wanted. As if the Kim Jong Il waiting in the trunk didn’t exist… Pops face had this tinge; I don’t know how to describe it. It was sinister. That’s it. Sinister! A SINISTER LOOK OF VICTORY! We walked back to the car, we heard a faint knocking from the trunk. “honey…honey”…Kim Jong Il wanted out of her 4x4 PRISON…. Dad finally let her out. Needless to say the evening wasn’t pleasant. Needless to say mom didn’t join in a lot of future movie nights. But hey, I had fun watching the movie and that buttery popcorn was delicious!

You HAVE to find a way to put this into a movie. It also goes to show just how much we're all alike.

My dad made ME get in the trunk!

Haha CLASSIC ASIAN MOVES!! And your mom is the bomb at saving money. I won't lie, I'm impressed by her skills!!

...don't worry, I had to say I was 8 when I was actually 13 to get into the local swimming pool for $4 instead of $10. I'm still pretty amateur at fooling the movie theatre people though >.<

stories about parents always remind me a lil bit of my dad...~ we never take him to the movies..he always falls asleep and snores really loud ~ no matter what movie it is.  actually he does that at church too...and everywhere else.

Hahaha! You have a lot of memorable memories I must say. I remember when we didn't have enough room in my friends car so we could drive me and my sister home so we ended up putting one of the passengers in the trunk... XD needless to say it would have been hilarious if we'd been pulled over by the cops. But we weren't, still even if it would have sucked getting in trouble it would have been hilarious if it had happened.

Great Blogs! Thanks for updating !

Hahaha! I had almost same kind of experience, except we were going to this amusement park. I was 6 years old and very small so my dad but me in a bag and walked through the gates :) No one noticed that he had a kid in his bag. Hilarious!

Laughing so hard. Jeremy read this over my shoulder and said, "Man, that has to be true 'cause it's just so fucked up."

But you know, I think every family has a story like this, where one parent desperately wants to save money, and the other wants to show the kids a good time. And you're absolutely right--both are doing it "for the family." It's like the Gift of the Magi.

Yay for movie popcorn. Who cares if it's overpriced? It's delicious.

Wow, what a funny story. I never went to a drive-in, but I doubt my mom would put herself in a trunk! My parents only took me to the dollar cinemas when I was a kid, it was a second run theater, tickets were a buck, and the floor was always sticky.

I'm personally not a fan of popcorn during a movie, I don't need to hear all that chewing in my head. And it's kinda annoying when the person in front of you has all this smelly popcorn, makes it hard to immerse yourself in a movie. But I remember always bringing my own candy...and sometimes still do to this day!

Wow....I see a lot of similarities between me and your mom in respect to not buying movie pop, popcorn, or other over-priced "snacks."  Since there's really no such thing as a double-feature anymore, let alone any drive-in's that are within a 100 miles of me, I usually make sure the family ate well before we leave the house and if we're starving after the movie, go out to a nice restaurant.

When I was a kid it was fun to go to the double-feature at the drive-in.  That's where I saw most of those wonderful family Disney movies.  We always brought our own snacks and they were delicious!  Ah, good times.

That's really funny.  That really taught mom a lesson.  But we used to do that same thing to go to the Drive-in (minus the trunk subterfuge), pack everyone up, bring snacks, and even go in our PJs so when we fell asleep, Dad could take us inside and up to bed.  When I was older Dad and I went to see two drive-in movies - The Longest Day (he was in D-Day) and The Godfather (he was Italian).  I don't EVER remember my folks taking us to the movie theater though...but they used to drop us off on a Saturday and we were quite young.  I guess it was safer back then.

Great story. Running back and forth to the concession stand and playground at our drive-in was half the fun!   Kim Jon Il...hehehe.
