Bintan + Singapore + F1
Tuesday, Oct 7, 2008 2:08AM / Standard Entry / Members only
Recently, I got to take a nice trip to Bintan and Singapore. The trip to Bintan, Indonesia (a short ferry ride away from Singapore) was a nice, relaxing beachy getaway that was much-needed after a hectic period of work and projects. It felt great being able to chill at the beach everyday... and I also got to snorkel, go biking, learn windsurfing (it's definitely not easy!), and go swimming.

Then I was in Singapore for the F1 races. I have to say that for my first time watching car racing, it was pretty cool to see it live, and we had a great view by the bay. We were seated in a huge grandstand where we couldn't see any other portion of the racetrack except for the stretch that was the width of the grandstand. You could hear the cars coming, then you'd whip your from right to left to catch a glimpse of them flying by, and then they were gone in a flash. Repeat for each car of the cars that whizzed by, and repeat for 61 laps. We happened to be seated in front of the track where a few of the crashes happened. Luckily everyone was okay. We got to see the driver of the first crash climb out of his car admist all of us in the crowd cheering and the crane lifting the crashed car off the tracks, so it was kinda cool to see some of this action in front of us. As you probably know, aside from several crashes, there was the embarrassing pit stop drama with Ferrari, who started off the first part of the race in first place and ended up losing, badly.

After the first crash:

The rest of the Singapore trip was spent eating, shopping, and partying and hanging out with friends, so it was fun! My good friend Sangita is possibly leaving Singapore soon, so I'm glad I got to hang out and party with her.
Also got to meet up with fellow AnD artist Jeszlene briefly. Great seeing ya! :)

My journey to Jordan and Egypt
Monday, Sep 22, 2008 2:12PM / Standard Entry / Members only
I know this is long overdue (almost half a year later), but here's my blog with photos from my Jordan & Egypt trip from earlier this year.
**JORDAN**
We spent the first five days in Jordan. Jordan (although bordered by some tough countries including Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt) is currently the most stable country in the Middle East. But that's not to say it hasn't experienced its share of violence. In 2005, there were terrorist bomb attacks in the capital city of Amman on three hotels which killed 60 people... and we happened to have stayed in one of these hotels (Radisson SAS Hotel) on our first night. It was a little unnerving, but luckily everything went smoothly.
Highlights from the Jordan trip:
-AMMAN - Roman Theater
-Mount Nebo: The place believed to be where the prophet Moses was buried.
-The Dead Sea: The lowest point on earth at 408m below sea level. The water is so salty (six times saltier than the ocean) that plant and animal life can't survive. But... everybody floats. (If you look closely at the pic below you'll see people floating, not swimming, in the water.) We got to float around the Dead Sea for a bit before sunset. Very salty indeed, don't go in if you have any cuts on your body.
-Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan: This was the site where Jesus was baptised. We got to walk up to the Jordan River and touch the "holy" river water. My poor friend bottled up some of the holy water to bring home as a souvenier, only to have her mom unwittingly pour what she thought was old, dirty water down the drain.
-Wadi Rum Desert: We spent the night in this enchanting desert where Lawrence of Arabia used as his headquarter during WWI.

-PETRA: Exploring the lost city of Petra was easily my favorite part of the trip. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it's a breathtaking half-buried city where the buildings and tombs are carved out of red rocks, and was the site where scenes from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were filmed. Words simply can't describe the beauty of the place, and photos barely do it justice. If anyone visits only one place in Jordan, this is the place to go!

- The delicious food: Kebabs, hummus, baba ghanouj, breads... yum! (I called
the breads below "little pillows of heaven"... =9 hehe)

**EGYPT**
We stayed in Egypt for 12 days. It was amazing to see the pyramids in person. But the air quality in Cairo was awful. Not sure if a sandstorm had just hit or if it's normally so polluted, but the air was practically brown in color, and as a result I ended up with a terrible case of asthma that left me incredibly sick for the following four months! =( Nonetheless, it was still one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips that I'm glad I went on. For anyone planning to go (especially anyone who has asthma), I'd say to bring face masks... no joke.
Highlights from the trip:
* MOUNT SINAI: The biblical Mt. Sinai is where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. We rode camels for 1.5 hours up the mountain and then hiked the 3750 Stairs of Repentance to the summit.
* CAIRO
- Pyramids and the Sphynx: After reading about them and seeing them in movies all this time, it was neat seeing them in person.

- Egyptian Museum and the Royal Mummies: The idea of looking at dead bodies (mummified or not) freaks me out, but even I couldn't resist peeking at the mummies of the ancient kings and queens of Egypt.
-Coptic Cairo - Church of St Sergius: It's said that this church was built over a cave where the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus took shelter after fleeing to Egypt.

* ABU SIMBEL - The Great Temple of Ramses II was impressively carved out of the mountain off of the Nile River. This city is at the farthest southern tip of Egypt, closest to the border of Sudan.

* AWSAN - Nubian Village: We visited a small, colorful Nubian village and spent the time walking through the narrow alleyways and taking photos.

* LUXOR - Valley of the Kings Tombs: In addition to visiting three royal tombs, we also visited the tomb of King Tut, where we saw his body.
-Luxor Temple: The stunning remains of an ancient temple eerily lit up at night.

* BAHARIYA OASIS - Jeep ride through the Black Desert. The rest of our group of friends all camped out overnight but I was pretty sick then, so after the jeep ride through the desert I went back to a "nearby" guesthouse ("nearby" meaning a 2 hour drive away) for the night.
***UPDATE (SEPT 23, 2008): Umm, just heard about a group of tourists kidnapped while camping in the desert in Egypt a few days ago. Scary, especially since they were abducted while camping in a part of the desert that was just south of where we were and where my friends all camped out overnight! Ack!
* ALEXANDRIA: Founded by Alexander the Great and once ruled by Cleopatra, this seaside city was charming and the kids were friendly and curious.

Sensory Runway
Wednesday, Aug 27, 2008 2:24PM / Standard Entry / Members only
Kate and Roger did a great job of putting together their fashion/dance/art show Sensory Runway last Wednesday at Cliq! They incorporated fashion with dance and art for a unique event. There was a fashion show featuring six designers (Kanchan Couture, Axis, Gio Chiappetta, Annie Who, Misha Designs, and One Man Stand), dance performances (Capoeira and hip hop dance groups), and artwork for auctioning.
I had a few other events to attend, so I was only there for a short time, mainly the fashion show and a little while afterwards. Here are some photos I managed to take that evening.
Annie Who:

One Man Stand: (and Vince giving his intense look)

The rest of this week will be a super busy one with the Mastercard Luxury Week fashion shows. Last night's opening show had a number of special guests, including famous HK actor Simon Yam, TVB actress Myolie Wu, and AnD artist Denise Keller who's the fashion ambassador of Mastercard. Should be a busy but interesting week ahead...

My celebrity twin?
Monday, Aug 18, 2008 12:25PM / Standard Entry / Members only
Have any of you ever been told that you look like someone else, particularly someone famous or well-known?
Recently I was told that I look like Hong Kong singer and actress Karen Mok. I've actually heard a number of people tell me this before over the past several years, the first person to do so being my mother-in-law. To be honest, I don't see that much of a resemblance... except in a few photos that I came across of her where I can maybe see a slight resemblance in our smiles or lower face structure...? But if a number of different people think so, then maybe there's something they're seeing that I can't see myself when I'm looking in the mirror or looking at photos of myself?
I guess it's not unusual to occasionally meet people with facial features that remind you of either someone who you know or someone in the public eye. I have a few friends who I thought resembled other people. I swear that one of my friends reminds me of Miriam Yeung, a HK singer and actress. And AnD artist Gloria Wong looks a lot like my friend Vikkie, and I even told Gloria this the first time I met her!
Well, two years ago, I actually saw Karen Mok in person in Causeway Bay and had the opportunity to take a photo with her. I figured that it'd be interesting to have a picture of us side-by-side for better comparison, so I asked her to take a picture with me, and had my sister to take a photo of us using my cell phone (since neither of us were carrying a camera that day). We posed together for the phone camera, but unfortunately, when I checked the phone for the picture afterwards, it wasn't there. Apparently my memory was full from too many text messages and the photo was never captured! D'OH! There goes my opportunity for a photo with my "celebrity twin"... =P
Oh well... here are pics of us, separately. What do you think?

Alicia Keys live!
Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 9:32PM / Standard Entry / Members only
I went to the Alicia Keys concert last night in the HK Asia-World Arena, and I gotta say... that girl has such an AMAZING voice, so soulful and powerful! If you listen to her songs, you can tell that she truly gives it her all. She's beautiful, and of course so talented, she played on a grand piano for many of her songs and she sounded incredible live.
She really made the crowd work hard for the encores, both of them, each time only coming out for one song. Of course we all went wild though when she came back out for the first encore with "No One", everyone in the crowd was really into it even those of us way in the back of the arena. We were all up on our feet singing along and rhythmically throwing our hands in the air to all the "OH OH OH OH!"'s of the song... :) What a blast! Then she came back out with a strong, powerful final performance of "If I Ain't Got You"... preceded by her graciously telling the crowd that she knows that she wouldn't be where she is, here playing in Hong Kong, if it weren't for all of us.
In her song "Superwoman", she has some cool lyrics encouraging and celebrating the strength of woman out there. I love the following lines: :)
"Even when I'm a mess
I still put on a vest
With an S on my chest
Oh yes
I'm a Superwoman"
Our seats were pretty far back and on the ground level though. So me being the shorty that I am and it being just my luck to sit in back of the tallest guy in the row in front of me (of course, Murphy's Law, grrrrr!), I couldn't see the stage at all. :( I spent the entire concert watching the performances from the big screen next to the stage. But it was DEFINITELY worth being there and hearing her sing live, even if I couldn't actually see her. I even ran into quite a few friends at the arena... Marsha, Terence, Steph... lots of Alicia Keys fans. =D
Being so far from the stage, I didn't get to take any photos or videos that were decent enough to post. But here are some YouTube videos (no official videos though, they've disabled the option to embed) of some of my favorite Alicia Keys songs performed live.
