Resolutions

I am a big believer not only in making resolutions, but forming a plan to achieve them.

The difference between a dream and a reality is a plan to get there from here.

Last year around this time I asked readers to share their resolutions.  I'd like to do the same this year.  I'd also like to hear from the readers who shared last year to know your successes as well as your challenges and to know how you might change your plan if your resolutions weren't kept.

HusYM - some thoughts: 1. It's great that you're working for Recording for the Blind That's a very proactive choice which will get you lots of experience and practice. I actually know a successful voice over artists who did that right before her career boomed and i think it was partly because she surrounded herself with voice over that helped her stay focsed and really push forward as well. 2. Debt is a tough one - best thing to do is make sure you are not taking on new expenses. Also - don't fear the numbers - put them in front of you and look at them - just like someone weighs themself when they're on a diet, watch your debt every day and track expenses - It's rewarding to start to see the debt column shrink and eventually the asset column grow. Don't worry about the size of the numbers in the beginning - the main focus is to shift the direction of the flow - and it's a slow and steady process. (I don't know if you've ever read me mention that I grew up on welfare, so this sort of thing was something I was aware of growing up.) Also - one more thing.... it doesn't seem like this now.... but there is actually a little odd advantage to being where you are at right now.... let me put it like this... when you are building a house out of cards.... the first few cards are pretty easy to set up - they don't work out, you set them up again - the stakes are low. As you get to the 2nd and third story of the cards, you start to take on pressure and it becomes more and more stressful to stack the cards, you can't move as nimble as you could when you were first seting up. However - the key is to make sure those intial cards are strong and get reinforced when you first build them. I think building your career is just like this... when you start out - there is really nothing to lose. You can take whatever job you feel comfortable taking, you can try defining yourself however you want and essentially - if something isn't going to work, you can hit the reset button because no one knows (or cares really)... the key is to just DO things... I know a lot of successful people whose turn around couldn't come until they'd lost their position before. I knew an actor who wanted to write and direct and had a little clout, but until he lost everything and was driving a limo - that's when his ego got out of his way and he actually started over from a humble position and just made sure he put himself around "the right people." Yes, he was professional, yes, he understood the industry and he had some talent. But a lot of people fit that description, but their egos block them... I think having that awareness plus lack of ego getting in your way (i.e. I'm too good for that job)... I think it can bring good things. So Good Luck in 2009! (oh, Kelly does a lot of VO work, you should make your goal to meet her when you're working on a show with her at some point!)

wow, that was long and I still have more thoughts... A deep voice that can actually PERFORM is a rare quality - if you can put some energy and character into your voice - all you need to do is make sure people know how to reach you. Just FYI: We hired two voices from this site this year: http://voice123.com/

you are good!!! does this mean i am going to get quoted somewhere....hahaha! very interested to see how and why you pulled this up but its a good reminder of last year. 1) spend more time with familiy 2) conquer daily fear 3) build a business 4) take care of self ALL i can say is yes i did all of these a step at a time. My priorities shifted and i paid more attention but i am still working on these. It's more of a daily mantra as a reminder to keep myself in check. They are all related to each other in some way and become like a chain reaction. You just gotta find that point and press the button which i majorly did a couple months back. This year - means building on these areas even more. They need to co - exist in harmony. One other addition is that i needed to really look and listen to people properly around me and take a deeper interest in the personal works instead of surface level... its always been genuine but needs to be deeper especially now as i have the time to refocus myself. Had that at one point in my life.. and somewhere it became less. This enriches you. I never really make plans.. you have a vague idea in your head as far as the direction you wanna live. I just aim my energies that way and life kinda falls into place. I am a stronger believer in not messing with what is meant to be and fate. where's your plan this year?
