After finishing up my latest gig in Singapore, I decided to take a month off to visit my family and friends in Chicago during the month of November (and a little into December).  It was good timing as my family's martial arts school had recently relocated into a vastly superior location and my father had arranged to have the grand-opening ceremony happen around the time of my visit.  The event was quite a success, thanks to the support of our family, friends, sponsors, and all attending members of the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association.

    Life in Chi-Town

My daily life during my one-month hiatus in Chicago consisted mainly of me taking a choo-choo into the city to train and teach at the family martial arts school, eating foods absent in Hong Kong, and hanging out with members of both my immediate and kung fu family.  It was super-duper.

At the station waiting for a city-bound train is where I start nearly every evening of my visit home.

    My second home.

Left2Rite - Choy Lay Fut and Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) classes, respectively.

Our school got hired to perform at the Chicago History Museum, since I was back in town I was able to help out a bit :)

...after each and every training session, we always found ourselves inside one of our two favorite hang-outs stuffing our faces...

...speaking of stuffing face... check out this very partial collection of what I put away during my visit!

...and speaking of visit, look who's in town!  My buddy Ella was in Chicago for a concert performance and I had a chance to grab a quick lunch with her before her plane took off to HK.

Look at all these little humans running around! My friends and family must have been busy while I was in Hong Kong getting kicked in the face, lol!

Alas, my kung fu brothers and sisters wishes me a happy journey with a get-your-ass-back-to-Hong-Kong party...

...as my visit home to Chicago comes to a happy end... my trip to Beirut from Hong Kong to shot a television commercial almost immediately began...

  • Workin' and Playin' in Singapore
     |  |  )

    Saturday, Sep 26, 2009 12:47AM / Standard Entry

For most of September, I was under the employment of a production company by the name Picstalk in Singapore to choreograph and shoot eight action/stunt/fight sequences for a 13 episode television series dubbed, Mr. and Mrs. Kok, an action-comedic-drama about a married couple of private investigators who solves cases together while experiencing the expected ups and downs of their slightly odd relationship.  It was a rewarding production and I was quite happy with the footage that we were able to shoot and paste together.  Though we did bust our behinds to best match our envisioned ambition to what was eventually captured on tape, my trip wasn't all just about work as I did manage to celebrate my birthday twice, meet up with some good friends, and hang with some very familiar members of the alivenotdead family (as they happened to be in Singapore for an event that I also took part in), all of which were definitely causes for much joy and merriment!

    HELLO SINGAPORE!

my home-away-from-home (and base of Farmville operations) in Singapore...

look who's face I found covering the walls of the production office!  it's none other than Johnny Lu, not only the new face of Singapore television, but also the homie who recommended me for this gig!

    WORK WORK WORK

    "is this thing on?"

    on location...

"I solemnly promise that I will stab someone in the face if I don't get all my shots in today."

first choreographing the fight sequence, than teaching it to the lead actress of the show, Tan Kheng Hua...

    ballroom-dancing-kung-fu...

"I solemnly promise that I will smash this monitor into someone's face if I don't get all my shots in today."

making stuff up + telling people what to do + looking into a tiny monitor = my job

designing the action and picking the angles to capture it...

    PLAY PLAY PLAY

on our off days I had a chance to meet up with some pretty super friends...

also had a chance to visit a national landmark and gain confirmation that Faye Valentine did indeed spend her childhood in Singapore...

got a chance to celebrate sister Race-a-Roni's birthday in her home town this year!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...

our producer Pauline and the crew surprised me with a cake and song on the set... notice me enjoying the cake with our hilarious leading man, Mark Lee...

the production crew then took me out to a Korean BBQ the next night! woohoo!

sister Rozy and her lovely family taking time out to celebrate my birth anniversary with me, I was very surprised and quite touched :)

absolutely amazing!  I got exactly what I wished and prayed for!

    ALIVE NOT DEAD

The Alive boys were in town to screen the Heavenly Kings movie and to do a question-and-answer session at the screening location.  Since I was already in Singapore and had the day off, I gladly joined the artiste panel after the showing and had the super-duper opportunity to speak with local Singapore audiences, artistes, and supporters!

    looks who's all in town...

pretending to know what I'm talking about during the post-showing discussion panel...

    hanging with elvanna and terence...

wished I could have continued to consume more whiskey and the carry-out McDonald's, but alas I had an 8:30am call time the next day...

    MISSION COMPLETE

Pauline and crew took us out for an awesome "Phil-is-finally-going-back-to-Hong-Kong" dinner, which included much delicious food...

    great food...

    ...and great people!

final step before heading back to Hong Kong - cutting up the footage and sticking the pieces back together so hopefully it will all make sense when the sequences are broadcasted onto your television sets!

A big THANK YOU to the entire cast and crew of Mr. and Mrs. Kok for making us feel so welcomed and happy during our time on and off the set in Singapore.  This whole trip was a very positive experience that I will treasure and remember always.  I am happy to say that I have "survived" Singapore and plan on going back for seconds someday soon!

  • Channel [V] presents: GOING GAGA event at FINDS...

    Friday, Aug 14, 2009 9:58PM / Standard Entry

Was invited as a guest tonight for Channel V's "GOING GAGA" event at FINDS earlier this evening...  I don't tend goto these events that often, but it was fun tonight, especially since I bumped into friend and fellow World of Warcraft enthusiast (and one of the VJs for the evening), Lisa S....

they gave me a bunch of mics, and then I proceeded to talk into them...

I was trying really hard to look "tuff" in this photo, but I think merely the fact that I was standing next to the vertically superior Lisa S. immediately made me appear the exact opposite of "tuff"...

Hello everybody!  Hope y’all been doing well and good out there.  I had spent a good majority of the last several months working in Shanghai on Bodyguards and Assassins.  There wasn’t too much to do in the area that I was staying at, so during my time off, I mostly just worked-out, chilled, and watched DVDs with Nic.  Because there really wasn’t much else to do during our time away from the set, Nic and I ended up racking up a fancy collection of Wing Chun training hours (which was very constructive).

Though the bustle was about a 45-minute-car-ride away, I did (on a few occasions) find myself taking a day trip to the actual city part of Shanghai with several fellow actors to do a bit of shopping and a great deal of eating...

This picture was taken in April during the first few days of my stay in Shanghai for Bodyguards and Assassins.   I think this was also the moment I realized that I had forgotten to pack my XBOX 360.

    Tourists…

Nic and I with the Strikeforce middle-weight champion, Cung Le (who was also working on Bodyguards and Assassins with us).  I nearly sprained my jaw trying to bite through his deltoid.

My friend Kate and the stage production that she was a part of were on the Shanghai leg of their tour and a few of the actors from her production was friends with an actor from the production that I was working on, so we all got a chance to grab a dinner and drink out in the city.

    On the set.

A metal wing combing over the clouds of a gradient blue sky.

Soon after I returned to Hong Kong, Leila and I were invited onto a cooking/interview/talk-show program called “Cooking Mama,” which is hosted by our very own friendly-neighborhood, MC Jin.  It was a fun time, and for the record, Leila is a pretty darn good cook!

Spurred on by our training sessions in Shanghai, I decided to introduce Nic and Onimal to to my Si-Hing (senior kung-fu brother), Cliff AuYueng, last week.  Cliff was very generous (as always) with letting us work-out at his school.

My Si-Hing, Cliff giving Nic a few words of advice.

Looks like Jen wants to learn how to efficiently punch a person in the face too.

Time flew by, it’s almost 10pm!

The paparazzi followed us for most of the evening and waited for us to leave the school.  Of all the photos they took, they decided to print this one of Nic sucker-punching my sternum while we waited for the elevator outside of my kung fu brother’s Wing Chun school.

Nic and I returned the following Monday (a couple of days ago) to train some more.

    Another good session.

And last night, director Teddy Chen invited a few of us out for a dinner and a chat.  A good time and good discussion was had by all.

Good times were had, good things are happening, and good happenings are approaching.
