twestival

I attended Twestival tonight. A festival for twitterers of HK to gather.

During the first hour, people were tweeting that the direction to culture club was wrong, then outta the blue, twitterers already at the event were tweeting directions, in real time.

I know this because we had a live tweet feed at culture club. Outspoken anonymous blogger DarkSideHK tweeted he was at the event with a bunch of morons. I tweeted back requesting him to reveal his identity cause he's got a few fans there.

Crickets.

i'm going back to memphis

First a few pics

Leno and Letterman had such rad hair then. The pic is from this piece from NY Mag. Great read if you're familiar with the late night wars. Personally, I prefer Conan over both.

(500)

just saw it tonight. finally.

Thanks for making LA look so beautiful.

Thanks for the Regina Spektor/Smiths/Wolfmother soundtrack.

Thanks for showing Dustin Hoffman, in his hey, in the Graduate.

Thanks for the split screen "reality vs expectations" scene, which was simultaneously funny and heartbreaking.

Thanks for musical dance number, which perfectly sums up the "shiteating grinning, fistpumping" high period.

Thanks for the scene on the bench. My boy JGL knocked it out of the park ...Read more

american gangster

This is my friend Mike Liu, aka the most knowledgeable music/film person I know, laying the smack down on a poor schmoe.

Now I think Mike went a bit over the line with the diss, but generally that's how we geeks do things.

I'm tired of these no-opinions, no-passion blog comments or blog entries. You gotta like, let it be known when you like something, and you gotta be willing to defend your pov, you know? Whether it be something as serious as politics, something as crucial as sports, or something as trivial as Rock...Read more

Kingdom Come

Bill Simmons is the best pop culture writer in the world.

There, I said it.

I've been checking out a lot of pop culture writers lately to get ideas for this side project. Chuck Klosterman, Charlie Brooker, Malcom Gladwell, that one cat who writes for Esquire, etc... it never hit me that my favorite writer, whom I had considered to be a "sports writer", is actually the most popular and probably the best pop culture writer of all.

Simmons never milked or pimped himself as a pop culture writer. He's known ...Read more

FIRST--

In this month's Muse magazine, there's a great feature on Golden Scene Distribution company written by The Golden Rock.

Golden Scene deserves our respect because the owner, Winnie Tsang, has a genuine passion for films. Often times she'll buy and distribute a film in Hong Kong knowing it won't make her any money; she distributes it because she believes it's a good f...Read more

The Black Album

The Twitter effect continues. Professional ball player Michael Beasley has checked himself into rehab a few days after one of his Twitter pics--a random pic meant to show off his room--showed a bag of weed . Of course, with him being a multi-millionaire professional athlete, that pic immediately became national sports story, and the jokes started coming in.

The fact that a random picture Beasley took of his place got him in trouble isn't the story here--although it again shows how Twitter is changing the way communication/media wo...Read more

The Blueprint 2 the gift and the curse

Teddy Kennedy got all the attention, but we've lost several people lately. Shing Fui On 成奎安... If you don't know the name, you'll surely recognize the face

In the late 80s and early 90s when HK films were the second m...Read more

Vol 2. Hard Knock Life

These are photos of the "tribute book" from the Slam Dunk 4814 Days After Exhibition.

It's great to see all these cats write about how much they love basketball and how much Slam Dunk changed their lives.

Some of the stuff written

"Slam Dunk will always remind me of my childhood"

"I will leave the comic for my son to read"

"I got into basketball because of two reasons: Michael Jordan and Slam Dunk"

BTW, I have, easily, the ugliest writing of the...Read more

In My Lifetime, Vol. 1

Shortly after I finished the hip hop feature on Monday afternoon, I went to work on the Holga Lomography feature. It was meant to run in the City section of SCMP.

I had written this paradoxical, oxymoronic, opening about how the contradicting the camera is. You know, I was doing that whole right hand, left hand, Radio Raheem Love/Hate thing.

I turned in the piece yesterday at 9am (after an all nighter) and was delighted to find the opening intact when the edited copy returned at noon. (The editor is known to rewrite ope...Read more
