2007年九月,奧斯卡最佳導演馬田史高西斯(Martin Scorsese),與傳奇搖滾樂隊「滾石樂隊」(Rolling Stones),合力炮製了年度最矚目的音樂紀錄片《電光滾石》。

《電光滾石》紀錄了滾石樂隊2006年秋季於紐約市著名Beacon Theater舉行的演唱會,更揭示了樂隊鮮為人知的一面。而紀錄片更由一班得獎攝影師負責拍攝,陣容鼎盛;把滾石澎湃動力盡現觀眾眼前。

滾石樂隊在搖滾樂壇的地位實在毋庸置疑。樂隊1962年在倫敦成立,他們的音樂承先啟後,觸動全球無數樂迷的心靈,更為日後的樂壇帶來了巨大的影響,創下史無前例的佳績。

由1964年的「The Rolling Stones」至1972年的「Exile on Main Street」,滾石樂隊於70年代初發行的每一張唱片,不但代表着那個年代的音樂,更闡釋了整個70年代。當時樂隊把藍調及R&B原素帶到白種美國人社會,令美國樂迷大開「耳」界。雖然早期樂隊並不明顯帶政治意向,但他們偏愛非洲裔美國人(如Robert Johnson、Muddy Waters、Howlin' Wolf、Chuck Berry、Marvin Gaye、Don Covay等)的音樂,正好與當年的民權運動一致。就算樂隊在1965年再無所出,單是這一點便已令他們名留千古。

很快地,樂隊各成員 – 主音Mick Jagger、結他手Keith Richards及Brian Jones、低音結他手Bill Wyman、鼓手Charlie Watts – 成為了反叛的同義詞。歌曲如「(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction」、「Street Fighting Man」、「Sympathy for the Devil」、「Gimme Shelter」等捕捉了那個年代的暴力、挫折和混亂。對樂隊來說,60年代欠缺愛與和平,他們亦視迷幻藥和烏托邦是無知可笑的東西。他們一向都強悍而實際。60年代盛行的理想主義,令樂隊明白到「You Can't Always Get What You Want」 - 想「Let It Be」(披頭四歌曲)?何不「Let It Bleed」(樂隊唱片名字)?

本着這些概念,在60年代邁進70年代之時,滾石樂隊充滿創意的風格跟流行音樂相悖。Beggars Banquet(1968)、Let It Bleed(1969)、Sticky Fingers(1971)及Exile on Main Street(1972)成為了經典中的經典。這些大碟能令樂迷如痴如醉,部分功勞歸於Keith Richards口中那位「極厲害的音樂人」 - 美國唱片監製Jimmy Miller。不過,在Let It Bleed製作期間拜Brian Jones離世,新成員Mick Taylor加入。這位結他手抒情流麗的風格,正好平衡了Keith Richards強勁有力的節奏,令樂隊的音樂更富層次,發揮空間更廣更大。

在音樂界,滾石樂隊一直扮演着勵志的角色,不服輸的精神維持至今。1978年,大碟Some Girls推出,貫徹滾石樂隊多年來的態度和活力;有punk的(「When the Whip Comes Down」),另一方面也嘗試了叫人忍不住舞擺身體的的士高旋律(「Miss You」)。前瞻性與流行元素俱備,令Some Girls成為該十年內最暢銷的大碟。1975年,Ron Wood取代Mick Taylor成為結他手,而此後三十多年的結他手沒有再換過。

在1981年的大碟Tattoo You(1981)中,「Start Me Up」及「Waiting on a Friend」相繼成為經典歌曲,也成為滾石樂隊歷來最矚目也最受歡迎的大碟。其後的Dirty Work大碟甚少被樂迷提及,歌曲的粗糙感及節奏的動盪,正好反映了樂隊灌碌唱片時的不穩狀況;事實上不少死硬派樂迷都是Dirty Work的知音。

1989年大碟Steel Wheels推出,樂隊七年來首次再度巡迴演唱,歌頌了各人光輝的成就。期間他們推出了爐火純青的大碟 – Voodoo Lounge(1994)、 Bridges to Babylon(1997)、精彩的現場大碟Stripped(1995)、精選大碟Forty Licks(2002),以及樂隊21世紀的第一張大碟的A Bigger Bang(2005),讓滾石神話繼續流傳下去。

除了銷售驚人的唱片外,滾石樂隊另一大成就,是為「現場表演」下了定義。他們1969年巡迴演出後被冠以「全球最棒的搖滾樂隊」,樂隊一直保持著高水準的現場演出,力保這個稱譽。當時不少樂隊都放棄了巡迴演出,如Bob Dylan、披頭四也不熱衷唱live。但滾石樂隊深信,能寫出好歌、推出高質素的唱片,並不代表現場為樂迷演唱、徹夜同rock是紆尊降貴。他們演唱會的其中一個特色是Mick Jagger那極具官能刺激的舞姿;這股熱情,至今仍在他們的演出中燃燒著。

20年匆匆過去,自1989年起,滾石樂隊每數年舉行一次巡迴演出,依然獲樂迷瘋狂支持。最近一次的巡迴表演,他們乘着大獲好評的唱片A Bigger Bang之勢,獲得樂迷熱烈的掌聲。Miles Davis前低音結他手 Darryl Jones於1994年加入滾石,取代了Bill Wyman,亦為樂隊增添了一絲朝氣和新動力。然而,對樂隊來說,巡迴演出的重點再不是門票銷情如何,而是樂隊的樂趣之一。每場演出,都是對樂迷的承諾,也是樂隊創作熱誠的見證。

樂隊在樂壇打滾將近40年,自然不時惹來「這是否最後一次?」的疑問。事實上,滾石多年來常常牽涉一些與音樂無關的新聞 – 被捕、激烈言論、離婚、婚外情,全部都是惹來公眾注目的瑣事。而毫無疑問,Mick Jagger多姿多采的生活,令他成為全球無人不識的藝人之一。

但無論如何,滾石樂隊的標籤,依然是他們的音樂及對創作的熱誠。縱觀各大報章頭條,Mick Jagger被視作一名獨一無二的歌手,也是舞台上最有吸引力的表演者;Keith Richards是推動樂隊、令音樂保持水準的原動力。結他手Ron Wood與Keith Richards緊密合作之餘,以靈巧的節奏潤飾和豐富了曲子。Charlie Watts呢,不消說,他被公認為rock界最偉大的鼓手,不但以節拍來配合、更以活力帶動整隊樂隊;他的鼓聲充滿澎湃動感,坐在台上後方卻依然惹人注目。他和低音手Darryl Jones把搖滾樂本來單一的節拍,變成如爵士樂般叫人難以抗拒、自然流露的旋律。

音樂人每一刻都活在當下、樂於創造,這也是樂迷對滾石樂隊熱情多年不減的原因。當然,高超的音樂造詣,以及對搖滾樂歷史的深遠影響,也是令樂隊歷久不衰的元素。「滾石樂隊」這名詞,代表着永遠最賣力、永遠沒有「最後一次」的精彩演出。

馬田史高西斯 Martin Scorsese(導演)

馬田史高西斯1942年生於紐約市,於「小意大利」區長大,這片土地為他日後的數齣電影提供了不少靈感。1964年他取得電影傳理學士,1966年再於紐約大學電影學院取得同科碩士。期間,他製作了大量獲獎短片,如《The Big Shave》。

1968年,馬田執導首齣正規電影《誰在敲我的門》(Who’s That Knocking at My Door?);1970年任紀錄片《胡士托音樂節》(Woodstock)的副導演及剪接師;1973年以電影《Mean Streets》獲得影評人及觀眾的掌聲。翌年,他執導首齣紀錄片《Italianamerican》。兩年後,他的《的士司機》(Taxi Driver)獲康城影展金棕櫚獎。1977、78及80年,他分別以《紐約,紐約》(New York、New York)、《最後華爾茲》(The Last Waltz)及《狂牛》(Raging Bull)獲奧斯卡八項提名,當中包括最佳電影及最佳導演。隨之他執導了《金錢本色》(The Color of Money)、《基督最後的誘惑》(The Last Temptation of Christ)、《盜亦有道》(Goodfellas)、《海角驚魂》(Cape Fear)、《賭城風雲》(Casino)、《活佛傳》(Kundun, The Age of Innocence)等電影。1996年,英國電影學院(British Film Institute)慶祝電影誕生一百週年,遂邀請他與Michael Henry Wilson合作執導一齣長達四小時的紀錄片《A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies》。

2001年,馬田製作史詩式紀錄片《Il Mio Viaggio In Italia》,記錄了他對意大利電影的熱愛。翌年,他籌備已久的《紐約風雲》(Gangs of New York)上映,勇奪多個獎項如金球獎的最佳導演。2004年12月《娛樂大亨》(The Aviator)上畫,贏得五項奧斯卡獎、金球獎和英國奧斯卡BAFTA獎的最佳電影。2005年,PBS的「美國大師」系列,選播了他的《卜戴倫漂流半生》(No Direction Home: Bob Dylan),並全球發行DVD。

馬田最近期的作品為2006年推出的《無間道風雲》(The Departed),電影勇奪美國導演公會(Directors Guild of America,簡稱DGA)、金球獎、紐約影評人協會(New York Film Critics)、美國國家影評協會(National Board of Review)及美國影評家之選獎(Critic’s Choice Awards)的最佳導演,並於奧斯卡獲最佳電影及最佳導演等四項獎項。

除此之外,馬田曾得到的獎項包括威尼斯影展金獅獎(1995)、AFI美國電影學院終身成就獎(1997)、林肯中心電影協會第廿五屆年會受勳(1998)、DGA終身成就獎(2003)。他是非牟利機構「電影基金會」The Film Foundation的創辦人及主席,專注為保存及保護電影歷史而努力。

Introduction – short

The actual members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team all prove themselves to be natural actors by playing themselves in this fictional youth drama set in 2004. In a city where baseball culture is non-existent, these baseball players are a minority by choice. The experience teaches them to be free-thinkers in dealing with love, friendship and their own sexuality. It also enables them to find the will to live in the face of death and the strength to conquer losing in a spectatorless sport.

Introduction – long

City Without Baseball is a youth drama with gay undertones that explores the lives of the Hong Kong Baseball Team members in a city where baseball culture is non-existent. The actual players, coach and manager of the Hong Kong Baseball Team all play themselves in the film and the story is based on true events in their lives.

 

Baseball is huge in Japan and Taiwan due to American influence in their history. Hong Kong plays soccer due to its ties to Britain while baseball is both an extremely minor and non-elitist sport. For the few who choose to play baseball in Hong Kong, they find themselves with little facility backup and zero spectatorship.

 

Being a minority by choice, in a modern city that could have offered them much more, this group of young baseball players surprisingly holds no anger towards society. Instead, the experience taught them to be free-thinkers in dealing with their sexuality and in contemplating on the meaning of life and death.

 

Possibly for the same reason, they all prove themselves to be natural actors, baring their souls in front of the camera most naturally and realistically. Locker-room camaraderie can also be staged effortlessly and beautifully because the actors are simply re-enacting their own little world where everyone knows everyone.

 

Through their calm acceptance of being a spectatorless minority and the constant use of Cantopop by recently deceased singers including Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, one can sense that the film, set in 2004, is also about a sense of loss and isolation felt by a city on its downturn.

Synopsis

This film is based on the stories provide by the Hong Kong Baseball Team players, and performed by themselves.

Hong Kong is a glamourous city with everything but baseball, almost.  A brand new diamond and a charismatic new coach bring hope to the underrated delegation.  Yet their passionate lives are no less intriguing.

The coach from Taipei meets a beautiful beachfront girl.  The masculine pitcher attracts more fans than he like while he desperately attempts to save a suicidal girl.  The artistic rookie who is also into punk music and fashion is so attached to the pitcher that it aroused suspicion to his sexuality, from his teammates as well as himself.

In the fateful Asian Cup, they defeat Indonesia and Thailand, the two strongest teams in the group they have never conquered.  Amid the ecstasy of achieving the greatest victory ever, they lost to Sri Lanka, the weakest link, in the final match and were sent straight to the hell from heaven.

Biography – Lawrence Lau

Lawrence Lau (also known as Lawrence Ah Mon) was born in South Africa in 1949. He grew up in Hong Kong and later studied film production in California, USA. He was an assistant director for Tsui Hark and went on to become one of the major directors of the 2nd New Wave of Hong Kong Cinema in the late 1980s. He is renowned for his on-location realism and a sensitivity for humanistic drama, always motivated to root his characters into the social context of an era. His first majorly acclaimed film Gangs (1988) deals with triad youths. His continuing interest in exploring the young generation as they confront social problems in modern Hong Kong was demonstrated in Queen of Temple Street (1990), A Boxer's Story (1991) and Spacked Out (2000).

Biography  - Scud

Born in mainland China amid the Great Culture Revolution, Scud was raised by the hands of his beloved grandmother, before moving to Hong Kong with parents and a younger brother at 13. In spite of excellent results from the secondary school, he had to devote the next 20 years to a career of IT, worked for multi-national companies, founded a public listed company, and acquired a bachelor degree thru part-time study. He moved to Australia for a permanent residence and to reflect on his life.  Realizing that he has fulfilled the dream of others but not his own --- music and literature, he returned to Hong Kong to start an indie film company, Artwalker, wrote and made his first film, City Without Baseball.

本片由香港棒球隊成員演回自己,講述他們04年發生的故事,兼具生活感和紀實性。阿聰是港隊的首席投手,卻遇上了沉迷死亡的少女。連番失戀的阿俊對阿聰卻越來越有好感,甚至懷疑自己的性取向。

故事大綱

這是關於香港棒球代表隊的故事,取材於香港棒球隊成員提供的事跡,并由他們演回自己。

棒球在香港是一項幾乎不存在的運動,一個嶄新的球場和一位具魅力的新教練為一群精力充沛的小伙子帶來希望,而他們在球場外的感情生活和激烈的球賽一樣出人意表,耐人尋味。

從台北隻身而來,被隊員們稱作"大帥哥"的戴教練,很快就邂逅和戀上聰明而美麗的離島少女阿平。

阿聰是港隊的首席投手,和捕手阿忠是天衣無縫的拍檔,共同進退的好友。比阿聰年少幾年的阿俊有意挑戰先發投手的位置,令阿忠非常不滿。

阿俊除了打棒球外,還醉心時裝設計和熱愛"夾Band",缺乏專注的態度令他在隊中很孤立,但他的天份成功說服教練讓他一試。

胸襟廣闊的阿聰毫無保留地幫助阿俊練球,不但令阿俊佩服,還吸引了他的女友移情別戀。 連番失戀的阿俊對阿聰有越來越強烈的好感,甚至懷疑自己的性取向。 他不願暴露弱點,獨自在痛苦中徘徊,只有成熟穩重的隊長阿良予以開解。

兩年一度的”亞洲盃”棒球大賽,從未有過好成績的港隊,頭場大敗於巴基斯坦後,吸收教訓擊敗新加坡,再接再勵破天荒打敗強敵印尼後,更淘汰上屆冠軍泰國,只要在最後一場輕取最弱的斯里闌卡,就可以奪得冠軍,升上和日本,韓國,中國和中華台北同組的亞洲A組,寫入香港體育史冊。

勝利在望,全隊陷入如夢的狂喜,但美夢沒有成真,創造歷史的是斯里闌卡,打敗了他們從未嬴過的香港隊。

雲翔簡介

雲翔生於中國大陸,在文革的搖籃里,祖母的慈愛中長大。13歲與弟弟隨雙親移居香港,因家貧開始半工讀生涯,雖有優異的會考成績亦無法繼續升學,展開20年的全職IT工作。其間從公開大學獲得電腦學位,在跨國公司工作多年後創辦軟件實驗室並成為上市公司。退下前線移居澳洲思考人生,東望太平洋之際醒覺到自己完成的只是周圍大多數人的夢想,而本身的心願:音樂和文學,卻未曾發揮。40歲前回港成立獨立電影公司:藝行者,編寫及製作第一部電影:無野之城。

Synopsis

The actual members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team all prove themselves to be natural actors by playing themselves in this fictional youth drama set in 2004. In a city where baseball culture is non-existent, these baseball players are a minority by choice. The experience teaches them to be free-thinkers in dealing with love, friendship and their own sexuality. It also enables them to find the will to live in the face of death and the strength to conquer losing in a spectatorless sport.

Synopsis

This film is based on the stories provide by the Hong Kong Baseball Team players, and performed by themselves.

Hong Kong is a glamourous city with everything but baseball, almost. A brand new diamond and a charismatic new coach bring hope to the underrated delegation. Yet their passionate lives are no less intriguing.

The coach from Taipei meets a beautiful beachfront girl. The masculine pitcher attracts more fans than he like while he desperately attempts to save a suicidal girl. The artistic rookie who is also into punk music and fashion is so attached to the pitcher that it aroused suspicion to his sexuality, from his teammates as well as himself.

In the fateful Asian Cup, they defeat Indonesia and Thailand, the two strongest teams in the group they have never conquered. Amid the ecstasy of achieving the greatest victory ever, they lost to Sri Lanka, the weakest link, in the final match and were sent straight to the hell from heaven.

Production Notes

CONCEPT:

This is a film about dog’s best friends, evolving around the people and dogs living in Hong Kong. It is about love and compassion. This Darling Life explores the diversity in Hong Kong’s society, and in turns reveals the residents’ feelings on issues of love and life, expanding to a universal quest for respect and equality in all living beings.

CONTENT:

The documentary opens up with the director’s feelings towards the slow tortuous sickness and eventual death of her dog Baby, her companion dog of sixteen years. It slowly meanders into her feelings about life, death and love, questions that have intrigued mankind for centuries. The stories in this documentary unfold into imageries of what concern us the most in our short and darling life.

DIRECTOR’S WORDS

I first contemplated doing this project when I was producing pro bono a video for a non-profit animal welfare organization, Animals Asia.  I came into contact with many fascinating people and cases. The people are all normal residents who have a big heart. These people revealed to me how they tackle the odds and manage their lives into meaningful and constructive ones. They became my teachers. Hopefully this documentary would transcend into a story about humanity, and that it would teach us how to respect and love life a bit more, not just towards others, but also towards oneself.

The film weaves visual richness and cutaways that feature the City, offering a poetic form of documentary filmmaking using a strong personal and self-reflective angle to draw the audience into an emotional journey. It becomes a visual poem.

COLLABORATION:

The documentary involves interviewees/residents of Hong Kong from multi-cultures. It is produced and directed by Angie Chen, who received her MFA from UCLA, returned home to direct three features in the eighties, and subsequently went into directing television commercials and teaching. Her short film “The Visit”, shot in Germany and finished in the U.S., has won international accolade and is in permanent collection in the Hong Kong Film Archives.

The crew is comprised of professional peers from the industry, graduates and students from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, The Hong Kong Art School, and Baptist University. They are mostly from Hong Kong and China.

Original music is collaborated by local Hong Kong artists, Ellen Joyce Loo of People Mountain People Sea and veteran musician/composer Wilson Tsang.

Post-Visual Effects are engineered by Yu+co, a US based Motion Graphics House run by two Hong-Kong-born brothers, executed by a Spaniard artist.

 

The one thing in common amongst them is the PASSION shared. The collaboration of such a team, with young talents and accomplished veterans, has brought about creative interchange among different nationals and generations, accentuating cross-cultural and cross-generational understanding.

一切始於一條小狗。陪伴了導演16年的小狗Baby被疾病折磨,慢慢走向死亡……這個與摯愛分離的痛苦過程,將導演帶入記憶的長河,重新思索自己和家人的感情。亦以狗為嚮導,打開心扉,去傾聽其他狗主的精彩故事。在這些人與狗的故事背後,我們探索的是人類永恆的命題:生命、死亡和愛。透過絢麗的影像,看看在我們短暫而又可愛的一生中,最重要到底是什麼。

導演的話

決定創作《愛與狗同行》是源於一次奇妙的經歷。在慈善機構Animals Asia舉辦的“狗醫生動物醫療計劃”中,我有幸結識了許多有趣的人,他們只是普通市民,都要爲生計而忙碌,卻無私地把時間與精力投入愛護動物的事業;看著這些可愛的人如何看待生命,如何令自己活得熠熠生彩,讓我心中充滿了感動。於是我決定用我的攝像機去講述一個關於人性的故事,故事裏有對生命的尊重與熱愛。這尊重與熱愛,是對其他人的,亦是對自己的。

藝術風格:

這部清新怡人的紀錄片一不小心,很容易就會拍成一部動物紀錄片,但導演卻賦予這部影片罕見的思考力度和且深且痛的詩意表達。透過一個個有趣的故事,帶領觀眾一起體驗奇妙的情感旅程。雖為紀錄片,卻有著劇情片所特有的情節脈絡和女性導演獨有的極微妙的情緒跳動,賦予了紀錄片別樣的光彩。

多元文化合作

本片由資深導演、製片人陳安琪導演。陳曾於八零年代執導三部劇情長片,之後跨入電視廣告界,並積極投身教育事業。其於德意志拍攝、於美利堅完成的短片“探訪”獲得國際讚譽,並獲香港電影資料館永久珍藏。她攝製的電影與廣告亦同樣獲得難以計數的獎項與提名。

在本片中,你會看到聚居香港的各個種族人士,他們有些富有、有些貧窮,有些甚至無家可歸; 有些對動物置之不理,有些卻視寵物如命。出場的狗仔亦多種多樣: 有純種、有混血; 有居食無憂的、有慘遭遺棄的,更有受嚴格訓練,威風八面的。

拍攝的班底主要來自中國和香港,既有在行業中浸淫多年的專業人士,亦有年輕而充滿創意的香港演藝學院、香港藝術學院及香港浸會大學的精英畢業生。香港80後實力派女生組合at17成員盧凱彤與擁有多年作曲經驗的Wilson Tsang攜手打造本片的原創電影音樂。後期特效由Yu+co的香港分部負責,該公司總部設立在好萊塢,曾參與過不少好萊塢大片的後期製作,如《藝妓回憶錄》、《斷臂山》以及07年熱爆全球的《色戒》等。

縱觀整部電影的製作,呈現出不同國家、不同文化、不同年齡層的碰撞與共鳴,富創造性地把香港展現給世界。
