the uncanny chuck klosterman

I been called a hater for rooting for the Celtics over the Lakers last June. Been jokingly (not) threatened about going to LA in my Paul Piece jersey (in response I'd bring up Paul Pierce's inglewood roots and they'd then STFU). But really, all this time I thought I rooted for the Celtics over Lakers simply because I was a fan of Paul Pierce and a supposed Kobe-hater.

But then I read this quote by Chuck Klosterman and he just basically pinpointed the real reason I'm a C's guy. I mean shit, he knows me...Read more

Dear Shaquille,

We've been apart for five years now. Like all breakups, one side was bitter and the other side moved on quick: you were throwing insults at me from South Beach while I was relishing on being the man in Hollywood. But of course, the moving on was a front--I was hurting inside. Throwing lobs to Chris just wasn't the same as to you. I had moments when I enjoyed the freedom of being single, 81 wouldn't have happened if you were around, I guess. But then doubts started kicking in: did I make a mistake? did I break up a g...Read more

500 Days of Summer: Most popular film at Summer IFF?

So my friend tried to buy tickets to Summer IFF a few days ago and he told me 500 Days of Summer are all sold out, yet he was able to get tickets to Vengeance. A bit crazy considering Vengeance screening is in TWO DAYS and there's still a month to go for 500 Days of Summer.

Then I logged onto to urbtix and noticed that yes indeed 500 is all sold out. Meanwhile, just about every other film is still available. So the verdict is in: 500 Days of Summer is the most in demand movie of the Summer IFF...Read more

Monday nights have always been awesome in my life. From the old days of watching 5 hours of wrestling with the guys back in LA (Monday Night Raw and WCW Nitro) to Monday poker nights to my current "band practice w/ cheap sushi then Entourage new episode" Mondays, it's always been good. But even by those standards, tonight was an interesting Monday.

I was offered the chance by a friend, Features Writer for SCMP, to tag along with her as a helping hand/photographer/assistant for this story she's working on, which is abou...Read more

bedtime reading

I may be the most frequent blogger on AnD with what, an average of 2.2 entries per 24 hours?

Yeah it's 4:20am right now. I'm living the freelance life, my sleeping hours are 5am to noon everyday. Oh wait, even when I had a full time job I was sleeping at those hours. Okay I'm just a night person. Even more so now that I have to work off a laptop cause my roommate and his girlfriend are home all day basically. Not that I mind cause I think they're pretty cool cats. And she helps clean the house. Yup he's got it good...Read more

too much AC aint a good thing (unless you're Jesse Spano)

I'm sitting at cafe habittu doing my usual reading, blogging, freelancing thing and I had to stop, pull out a hoodie from my bag and zip up. Why do I have a hoodie with me in August in HK?

Because Hong Kong air conditioning apparently have only two modes--off or full blast. I've been here over two years and I still can't get used to it. I guess being from Cali where the weather is always awesome done me in. Cause over there, there isn't this huge change in temperature from ...Read more

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEIPCOwY4DE

This is yet another amazing homemade video off the web.

Taratino, he went from underrated (Reservoir Dogs. Or maybe not, since RD stole the story from Ringo Lam's City on Fire) to just about right (Pulp Fiction) to overrated (Jackie Brown) to redemption (Kill Bill) to being too self indulgent (Grindhouse) in a decade. I have doubts about Inglorious Basterds but oh yeah I'll be first in line at ...Read more

"you and i...we can do this...forever"

This is an excerpt from the book No Country For Old Men. It's the words of Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jone's character):

My grandpa Jack used to say that being a sheriff was one of the best jobs you could have bein a ex-sheriff one of the worst. Maybe lots of things is like that. We stayed gone and stayed gone. I done different things. Was a detective on the railroad for a while. By that time my wife wasnt all that sure about us coming back here. About me runnin. But she seen I wanted to  so ...Read more

On my second marriage, hip hop my first wifey

I just talked to Jin. Interviewed him for this hip hop in HK feature I'm working on (I don't have the structure worked out yet but know I'm gonna start the piece with a verse from Nas' Illmatic, I'll be sad if the editors edit it out though).

I asked Jin what he thought of the locals misconception of hip hop and the "generic" style that they think is hip hop....the hip hop style so to speak...

"Hip hop is ever changing man... it's like a Transformer...naw no...Read more
