I gave the to the Red Cross because I believe that they do good work but I just heard about Mercy Corps. who have been providing relief.

In the aftermath of a powerful earthquake in central China that has killed at least 67,000 people and left as many as five million homeless, Mercy Corps is responding to survivors' needs alongside its local partners.

On Tuesday May 27,  Mercy Corps. coordinated shipment of three tons of medical supplies for survivors arrived in Sichuan Province. We are also working to help children recover from the trauma they've experienced.

Another offical donation channel for HK guys:
Sichuan Emergency Relief

The Home Affairs Department (HAD) has put in a mechanism to channel donations from Hong Kong citizens to the victims. The 20 Public Enquiry Service Centres (PESCs) of the 18 District Offices of the Department and Post Offices have started from 1:00 pm, 14 May 2008 to collect cheque donations from citizens during office hours. All donations received will be deposited into the bank accounts under the name of “The Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporated – Donations”.

All donations received will be duly accounted for and will be passed to five relief organizations, namely Hong Kong Red Cross, World Vision Hong Kong, Oxfam Hong Kong, United Nations Children's Fund and the Salvation Army for emergency relief operation related to the Sichuan earthquake.

Means of Donations

Donations may be made in the following manners–

(a) Cheque Donations
   
Cheque to be addressed to “The Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporated – Donations” or “SHAI – Donations”.
   
Make the donations at any Public Enquiry Service Centres of the 18 District Offices and Post Offices.  
   
(b) Cash Donations

   
Bank-in the donations into one of the following bank accounts namely “The Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporated - Donations”-  
   
  (i) HSBC (account number “502-256803-001”); or  
   
  (ii) BOC (account number “012-875-0-039683-3”).
   
Issue of Receipts and Tax Exemption

Tax exemption may be granted to donations made for the purpose of providing relief for victims affected by the earthquake in Sichuan. Receipts issued by HAD may be used for tax exemption purposes. Donors should contact the staff of PESC for a receipt if donations are to be made at PESCs. For donations made to Post Offices or the bank account of HSBC or BOC direct, we have prepared the attached receipt requisition form for completion by donors where necessary. The form should be returned to Headquarters (Attn. Finance Section) by post together with the original copy of the bank-in slip or the receipt issued by Post Offices.
