Short Blog

So, did that subject line get your attention?  Let's just say, I'm not know for writing short blogs.  I'm more of a marathon runner than a sprinter. It has been a while, so here is my update. The first draft of the Johnnie To article is written.  Now I'm editing/rewriting.  The article clocks in around 45-50 pages in double-spaced manuscript (not counting introduction, conclusion and bibliography--which will be the last things I write).  I haven't written anything this long in about 18 years, not since I handed in my dissertation (which ran a whopping 450 pages and sits gathering dust in the main campus library in two bound volumes!).  I've written research articles before, mostly on flamenco, but nothing this sustained.  Remind me never to do something like this again, unless there is money attached.  I have spent the entire summer researching it and now the entire fall writing it.  When the article finally sees the light of day on the website, I just hope it will be worth it.  I have my doubts about something I divided into two sections, variations on the same theme, if you will.  All day Saturday will be spent sorting this out.  You see how I've been spending my free time since May?  I can't wait for the day when I can just sit down and goof off, read something that I don't have to take notes on or think too hard about, the day when I have time to watch a movie simply because it interests me, and not because I'm writing about it.Back to work!

I enjoy writing, but I don't miss research. Though maybe without the 'blind' (yeah right) review, it would be better...

Flagday--My original proposal seemed quite limited. That was before I started doing the research. Then I discovered I was basically in virgin territory, which meant a lot more work for me, but also a much more significant contribution, overall. This is original research in the best sense of the word. But the topic really exploded on me and I ended up on a few detours, like the two weeks I spent reading about the current state of film criticism--aided and abetted by some heavy-hitters who provided bibliography. When a scholar of the stature of Chris Berry sends you references, you read them. Ditto for Gina Marchetti. I've read these guys' articles and, while I don't always agree with their theories, I can tell that they are very good at what they do and, Chris, in particular, is one of the big guns in Chinese film studies. Knowing that these academics will be reading it, as well as everyone from casual cinephiles to fanboys, makes me a bit nervous and motivates me to get the kinks worked out. Also, my editor is going to have some people read it, too, to make sure I don't make any truly awful gaffes. Best if I don't embarrass myself too much with this first submission.
