  • 50 years of fury...

    Wednesday, May 18, 2011 10:45PM / Standard Entry

Half a century celebrated on the docks...

Hard to believe I reach my fiftieth year in November, which much make me the oldest guy on AnD (except maybe Andrew Ng!). I'm now old enough to remember when 50 was considered ancient!

The secret to youth and vitality? Daily kung fu-rious training! Here are some photos taken by my good friend Nick de Semlyen, a writer/editor at Empire magazine (that's Nick in the red shirt in the photo below).

Thanks to Mak Sifu and the rest of the gang for making the fu such fun. We now train most days at 12 midday, at the park at the end of Wo On Lane in Central. Email [email protected] if you want to come and feel the fury!

  • B&E celebrate year one adventures at Filmart party

    Wednesday, Mar 30, 2011 9:10PM / Standard Entry

A gathering of the good, the bad and the beautiful...

The Chinese Banker's Club provided an unlikely setting for a bodacious bash held to commemorate B&E's first 12 months of movies, mayhem and mischief...

We came back from the 'Snowblade' shoot for Filmart meetings, so it seemed a good time to gather the clan.

The guests included capo di tutti cap Harvey Weinstein...

We thought he wanted to check out the 2011 B&E line-up, but apparently the phrase 'All you can eat Chinese buffet' had caught his eye on the invitation...

I'm grateful to Harvey for taking the time to screen our Snowblade footage, and give some great directing advice to me and career advice to Sable (which was probably something along the lines of 'don't work with this guy...')

Just to prove there really is no thing as a free dinner, I made a speech, and apparently opened with a joke about why size sometimes does matter...

    The crowd roared...

Well, more like muttered to itself...

We then screened our corporate video, with the trailers for Shadowguard, Gobie, Beach Spike and Hong Kong Movie Magic, as well as the teaser for Snowblade, and took the opportunity to present our sensuous new female furie, Sable Yu, to the gathering...

The wine flowed, the buffet groaned, and a good time was had by all...

For those unable to leave fast enough, I signed and singed a few copies of my Blood Bond novel (still available at a bookstore near you, or directly from Foreign Press...)

Many of the usual suspects were also to be found at the after party for the Asian Film Awards...

Onward, to another year's worth of action!

  • How Snowblade gets made...

    Saturday, Mar 19, 2011 6:49PM / Standard Entry

Snowblade wraps first blood soaked scenes.

After a week of sweat and (mainly fake) blood, we have our first couple of scenes in the can. My thanks to our terrific team, all the Ace crew, actor Taeki Gong (who wrapped today) and, of course, our lethal leading lady Sable Yu...

Here are some more images and quirky comments from the set...

    Come along quietly, madam...

My thanks to the indefatigable Harry du Young, who helped me shoot second unit.

Heck of a time for a script conference...

Gordon goes blood blind for 'Snowblade'...

Make up king Mike gets a message from Mossad...

The deadly duo - Taeki and Gordon

Sable applies some method acting encouragement to an extra.

    Ms Yu turns puppeteer

    Sable Yu is Pedicure Driver...

    Sable on screen

    Sable strangles a Smurf...

    She's (not quite) dead, Jim...

    Nap time for Sable Yu...

Sleeping on set! You can't get the help...

And that's the last time she'll misspell a name ... : 'Sabel' eliminates 1st AD Vicki Tang.

    Lady with a blade

    The softer side of Sable

    The eyes have it...

Take 8? Someone get me a real director...

Hell of a time for a script conference.

Taeki gives us 'mean and moody'...

    Hammer time for Harry

    Not so dirty Harry

Lining up to get a slice of (or slice by) Sable.

Our Chang Cheh-era Shaw Bros shot!

    Taeki wrapped...

What do you mean, you don't like the hat?

    Sable gives me some lip...

    Beast and the beauty

  • Snowblade Teaser Poster Released, Star Gets New Name!

    Monday, Mar 14, 2011 8:17PM / Standard Entry

    And introducing... Sable Yu!

Here's our first official Snow Blade poster, featuring the form and face of our leading lady Sable Yu. I know you've been following the Snow Blade adventures of Yung Yung Yu, but I finally convinced her that, to western ears, 'Yung Yung' sounds like the kind of name you'd give a panda.

Now, we love the hung mao, especially 'Kung Fu Panda', but this is not the name for a blood-drenched, blade-wielding woman warrior. So, our various Buddhist masters having been consulted, 'Sable' is her name.

To celebrate this new nom du guerre, here are some images showing the different moods of our lethal yet lovely leading lady.
