Get on the good side of the Admin Asst, and the world will be your oyster. (I speak from personal experience. Let's just say that writing doesn't pay the bills (and dancing cost me more money than it ever generated), so I'm (you guessed it) an admin asst! We hold the keys to the kingdom in our very capable hands (along with computer cables, phone lines, toner cartridges and reams of print outs). We can make your life a walk in the park or a descent into the lower reaches of hell. Most Admin Assistants trained to be something else--you'd be surprised what university degrees we hold, what exotic languages we speak (in addition to French and Spanish (very useful in North Carolina these days), I've working on Cantonese!!! now), our myriad interests (flamenco or tango dancing, Leslie Cheung or the films of Wong Kar Wai, gourmet cooking or art history, anyone?), our ability to master whatever technology somebody buys for the office, deal with moody co-workers, testy customers/clients, plan surprise birthday parties, run board meeting (and take minutes, too), write press releases, annual reports and manage hundreds of client records, and all of this before lunch and without breaking a sweat. Give that woman a raise, tell her how invaluable she is, and be sure and show her, every chance you get, how irreplaceable she is. They say that a dog is "man's" (a human's) best friend. Whoever said that has never met a grateful, fully appreciated admin assit who was being paid what he/she is truly worth, i.e., their weight in gold.
