Fashion Deja Vu

The hot new trend in Japanese fashion this season is fur leggings.

“レギンスを維持し、ドレスを失う” – Me

Don’t ask me why, I just noticed them starting to appear in Hong Kong, as all Japanese trends do.

They’re still better than those moronic sandals with boot tops:

“What are you,  f@#$ing retarded?” – my mother

There is also the accessory of a (hopefully matching) fur tail to be put on your purse or belt.

My, what a lovely piece of tail. Even if it’s not centered properly.

While this fashion trend, like so many others, amuses me, I couldn’t get over the nagging sensation that I had seen it before.

And I had.

In 1980.

At a Van Halen concert.

Who could have guessed that David Lee Roth was 30 years ahead of the Japanese fashion curve?

Then again, it’s really just another example of homosexuals being on the cutting edge of style, isn’t it?

Sean, you have just discovered the difference between "fashion" and "style". Fashion is disposable, of the moment, and easily recycled to new generations who weren't born the last time that trend walked the metropolises of the world. Style, however, is something that can take any fashion and make it a personal expression of the wearer. Most stylish people over 20 wouldn't be caught dead in these sad mukluks. Lets the teens wear them and think they are being rebellious. :)

It is just a trend, like wrestling boots a few years ago. Trends, and fashion, rely on things being new, then being old. Style is permanent, but fashion trends are temporary. Otherwise they wouldn't be trends!
