  • Big Ideas (Dont Get Any...)

    Wednesday, Jun 11, 2008 6:14PM / Members only

Radiohead held an online contest to remix "Nude" from their album - "In Rainbows" This was quite a difficult task for everybody that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that's played in clubs is around 90 - 130bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It's pretty difficult to seamlessly mix a waltz beat into a DJ set.

This resulted in lots of generic entries consisting of a typical 4/4 beat, but with arbitrary clips from "Nude" thrown in so that they qualified for the contest.

Thom Yorke joked at the ridiculousness of it in an interview for NPR radio, hinting that they set the competition to find out how people would approach such a challenging task.

James Houston decided to take the piss a bit, as the contest seemed to be in that spirit.

Based on the lyric (and alternate title) "Big Ideas: Don't get any" He  grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they're trying their best to do something that they're not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.

It doesn't sound great, as it's not supposed to. Here it is for your enjoyment.

Project "HOME" - An arts exhibition for the relief of victims of Sichuan earthquake -

    Background
Hi, we are an arts organization in Hong Kong. Our name is 'Art Fete Brings Hope 藝展予希望. We are governed by the Hong Kong Laws. Every year we carried out arts exhibition in various shopping malls in Hong Kong and collected funds for the charity organizations and provided arts therapy to the sick children, and to promote arts to the citizens. The charity organizations included UNICEF, ORBIS, Children's Cancer Foundation etc. Our members are now learning in the universities, or working in various industries, for example, arts education, design, architecture, advertising, corporate communications, public bodies, property development, or running their companies or married.

Having seen the Sichuan earthquake in China, we want to make contribution. We want to invite artists in various cities to join force to carry out an arts exhibition in Hong Kong to sustain the citizens' care and help to the victims in Sichuan.

    The Project
The project is to call upon artists in various arts perspectives to lend out their artworks for the arts exhibition. The theme of the arts exhibition is "家". We will not carry out any sales, or auction of the artworks during the arts exhibition. However, Oxfam will call upon the citizens to donate during the arts exhibition. We will make a book/documentary for the arts exhibition with photos and meaning of the artworks, and give the books to the Sichuan government for reference, and give the books to the charity organizations as a counselling tool, and as our blessing to the victims in Sichuan.

Your help will make a difference
We appeal to you to support or take part or to call upon your friends to do so in the arts exhibition. Our members are working on the following artworks, and your support or participation would make a difference:

Chinese calligraphy - the Chinese word '家' in various dynasties.
Architectural arts – illustrations and models for anti-earthquake schools and citizens
    shelters.
Installation arts - a human-size transparent container filled with fake steel bars, broken concrete, destroyed personal belongings, destroyed fixtures, fittings etc. It is
to display how the victims feel compression, breathless and helpless etc under the broken concrete.
Apparel arts - school uniforms made of scrapped clothes for the victim children.
Manga arts - various short stories about home.
Computer graphic design arts - showing the differences between Sichuan and Hong Kong in terms of geography, demographics, education facilities, residence, economy, major trades, standard of living etc. It is to stimulate the Hong Kong citizens to think how fortunate living in Hong Kong is.
Sculpture arts – a dragon form sculpture made of keys. Each key means a home, and the dragon symbolizes China.
Photography arts - the photos about feelings of home, or photos about children playing with their parents or friends etc.
Product design arts - self life survival emergency tools for earthquake, and the photos or illustrations of such self life survival emergency tools adopted in other countries.
Origami arts - origami of tables, chairs, beds, father, mother, brother, sister, grandparents, pet dog/cat etc. in rural home settings.
Handicraft arts - hand-made stationeries including student name tag, knitted pencil bag, school note books, wooden ruler, wooden pencil etc for rural village children.
Performing arts - songs with the meaning of 'HOME'. Marathon performance with the message of ‘HOME’.
Action arts - record the voices and sounds at the earthquake spot, and teach the citizens to close their eyes and listen with earphone.
Video arts - stories about the meaning of home and lives.
Painting arts - meaning of home and lives.

We would be very grateful if you could help and support us in this campaign.

Look forward to receiving your support and participation.

    Thank you.
