GCS 028: "The Postman" by Kevin Costner

It is 2013. War has crippled the Earth. Technology has been erased. Our only hope is an unlikely hero.

GCS is back after a while and this time I'll talk about a great movie, a movie that was actualy bashed by the critics because of the main actor, actually everything in the movie was bashed because the actor and director was Kevin Costner, and the movie is

The Postman (1997) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119925/maindetails

In the year 2013 civilization has all but destroyed itself. After a war that decimated the government and most of the population of the United States (possibly the world) people struggle to survive against starvation and rogue groups of armed men. One such group is called the Holnists. This group is bigger than any other and their leader, General Bethlehem, has delusions of ruling the country. A drifter (Costner) is captured by the group and forced to join. He escapes at the first chance and happens on a mail jeep with a skeleton in it. The skeleton is wearing a postal uniform and the drifter takes it to keep him warm. He also finds a mailbag and starts conning people with old letters. The hope he sees in the people he delivers to changes his plans and he decides that he must help bring the Holnists down.

Fun Facts:

  • References to other 'Kevin Costner' films: a mule is killed and Civil War battles (Dances with Wolves), and threatening to use a spoon as a weapon (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves).

  • In the sequence where Costner's character names Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr) as President, he continues with another reference to The Beatles by telling the assembly "It's getting better. Getting better all the time" from the band's song "Getting Better".

  • Residents of an apartment building in Metaline Falls, WA were paid to have their windows blown out during the "Hannibal at the gate" scene that takes place in Benning. The apartments were later repaired and cleaned up, returning them to new.

  • The area of Metaline Falls, WA (where a lot of the filming took place) did not have much to offer for housing film crews (like hotels) so many of the crew stayed at local campsites, rented rooms from locals. Kevin Costner rented a house from a resident of the nearby town of Ione, Wa. The stars and crew treated the locals very kindly even when approached for autographs when eating in local restaurants.

This movie has a lot of great scene, and unfortunatly almost none are on youtube so I bring you two videos, a dancing scene which I like! And a trailer!

Enjoy!

the only thing that really really bothered me about the movie was the scene with the kid holding the letter and the horse back riding...

That was a really good movie, watched it the other day for the first time in years. I didn't know, or maybe remember, the critics bashed it so much.
