we -- IN HONG KONG and ONLY in hk -- expect our cantopop stars and starlets to be perfect, plastic, pre-pubescent, desexualized, eternally teenage, virginal human beings, rather like living hello kitty characters -- rather than full-blooded adults who engage in normal activities, like sex, recreational drug use, cursing -- well, the full gamut of normal behavīor of fully-formed human beings, replete with the inevitable deficiencies of behavīor and character. the fact that we are horrified and transfixed by the entire episode illustrates the profound and unfair ambivalence in which we hold up these overexposed chinese pop stars. the whole episode is a testament to the hypocrisy and sexual repressiveness of hong kong chinese society at large. i'm glad we got to see  these celebrities naked and fornicating. it only shows that they are real flesh and blood, breathing and sweating like the rest of us. at the same time, i'm appalled by society's inability to avert its eyes and lose interest in this sordid, rather pathetic episode in cantopop gossip history. (for myself, i had no idea about this whole thing until i was in the heli lounge at shun tak two days ago and saw someone who looked like daniel wu, having a press conference on the TV. one of my companions then told me it was edison chen, apologizing for his sexual peccadilloes)
    ...
i can't wait until China Stylus (Jay FC. check out his page on AnD) and Red Dog Studio (Timon Wehrli), come out with their book of beautifully shot nude photos of chinese women, both ordinary and famous! that will shake things up too. OH!!! did you know that famous chinese women sometimes get naked and have sex????
    ...
JESUS, what kind of place do we live in????

HK doesn't sound THAT different than the US, just like a smaller community - like a high school where everyone is more tied into eachother's business.   But, if this was an A-list of B+list acotr with other actresses you recognized it'd be getting just as much commotion.

I love what you said here. I don't understand how the situation got so blown out of proportion, but living in the states its really no big deal to me; however, i hope everyone involved (except the perpetrator-the thief who stole the pics) comes out of it ok.
And i agree with what my sis (pokedpenguin19) said about it.

I do really hope that Hong Kong gets a big wake-up call after this scandal.

I agree ~~ I don't see what the big deal is....Asian entertainment in general represses things that people do in real life all the time.  It's annoying ~ they expect all their actresses to be virginal, skeleton like and then insult them even if they are.  HK Media is ridiculous sometimes ~~ >_<

Personally, I think the most important thing is  (1) to be responsible for one's own deeds, as everything we do have an impact on others; and (2) to consider other people's circumstance; (3) to respect other people's human rights to choose what they want to do for themselves.  (My full thoughts on this is in my last blog dated Feb 17.)

    Sweet i like your blog.

This is why i think asian's are more appalled at these types of acts. They really hold the stars to such great expectations that there is no room for mistake.

My favorite thing to say is "Im not a saint" I think this basically holds true for everyone. Its like big deal, we all fuck up, but everyone just hassss to pick on the poor artists.

Cant believe this got blown out of proportion, ha, come to america. Sex scandals are actually really common, sad to say, but its true.

Anyway, i agree with RenRen, time to move on. =]]

I think this whole sex scandal that really isn't a sex scandal has gone on long enough. People need to move on.

a gloss on my original blog entry: colin farrell is hailed as a poster boy of testoserone, whereas, for the most part, HK POP STARS are not allowed to be fully masculine, with the exception of a few older stars like jackie chan and chow yun fatt. the public prizes 30+ year old stars who retain the looks and morality of BOY-MEN until they are well into their 40s. look at aaron kwok! he's an excellent case in point. it's the same for women. what female stars do we have in hong kong who don't look like teenage barbie dolls? look at the Twins, for god's sakes! the flip side of my original blog-rant was that the average hong kong citizen's perception of beauty and moral value is based on celebrities looking and acting like silly teenagers for the rest of their lives. UGH. HK people do not embrace normal, adult sexuality in the same manner as the rest of the world. in hk, what equivalent do we have to incredibly sexy stars such as kim basinger, scarlett johansen, jennifer lopez, etc??? hk society doesn't accept these images of fully-fledged female (or male) sexuality.

amen. although i think we need to do another exercise on this, though. (damn you for making me think about this again!). let's scale it up as if this happened in the US. let's liken edison to, say, colin farrell (bad boy image, quite big stars in their respective areas, that is, edison in hk is to colin in the US); now let's take 2 a-list actresses and one b-list (sorry bobo). let's say cecilia is jessica alba and gillian is jennifer aniston. bobo gets to be...hmmm...anyway.

so 600 photos of colin farrell getting it on with jessica alba and jennifer aniston start circulating...well, i guess it would spiral in a similar fashion and would be a global phenomenon.

    that being said...
the only difference is that colin would never apologise in shame. he'd be out having a beer with the boys and whooping it up.

which proves your point: the action isn't BAD. the problem is it's just really unfortunate that the pics were released and that private moments were made public.

i don't see pam anderson and tommy lee in hiding. and now pam bagged the dude that was in paris hilton's video!

    what a world.

Try pointing that out to a Hong Kong person and you can bet that they'll disagree with you 100% without any logical reason to back their own rebuttal.  It is pretty pathetic.  What is this?  Ching Dynasty?  Even back in those days, sex was more open.  Why do you think the emperor have so many concubines?

There is too much hypocrisy in Hong Kong.  It's sad that the people of Hong Kong doesn't see it that way.  And to be honest, I'm more accepting of Edison's public statement than Gillian's.  She didn't look sincere at all when she said she was naive and silly.

china is so traditional and old fashioned.. in the u.s., everyone is so conditioned to what celebs do and their scandals.. but in china, it think they take everything seriously to the max.. and the media gets a kick out of reporting everything..

edison chen looks like daniel wu?.. ive never made that connection ever...

Hong Kong is hardly alone in celebriscandals.  I mean, look at Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc., etc., etc. here in the US.

But somehow Edison is different.  Any guy who has to have over 1,000 sexually explicit pictures on his computer, you have to scratch your head and wonder what is going on.  It sounds like some kind of sexual addiction to me.  The sad part of all of this is that he had to bring so many others down with him.  But maybe the rest of us have learned from this sad episode so that when the camera comes out, whatever your relationship to the camera man, unless you're a porn star the smart response is to "just say no".
