    Apple Battery Exchange Program

I had my 17 inch MacBook Pro for 18 months before the battery warped and deformed an inch overnight.

I went to the Apple website, clicked on support and ended up on a page called "MacBook and Macbook Pro Battery Update 1.2"

My battery fell under the correct dates of purchase and it was identified as an affected battery because as they wrote, "Battery pack is visibly deformed."

The page also goes on to say that this battery exchange program "extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer."

And again at the bottom of the page it says, "This program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer for Intel Core Duo-based MacBook and MacBook Pro computers."

BUT, it also says that Apple will determine if the battery is eligible for replacement.

In other words, having taken my battery to an authorized service provider in Hong Kong and then having been ping-ponged around, speaking to half a dozen customer service people over the phone in HK, Singapore, Europe, Philippines and Australia, I was told that my battery wasn't on the 'List'.  That I had to purchase a new one myself at a cost of HK$950.

I was put through to a product specialist in Australia who hung up on me twice!  Because I was complaining too much, I suppose.  He kept telling me that my computer was 210 days out of warranty and besides it wasn't on the 'List', even though the Apple website clearly states (here we go again) that the repair coverage for these batteries extends for two more years if they're 'visibly deformed'.

What happened next?  I spoke to customer service in Europe and they're going to give me a HK$675 discount on a purchase of HK$2250 or more on the Apple Store website.

So, I call to exchange my battery but instead I'm gonna end up buying more Apple products.  I feel ripped off.  Kinda like when you hear advertisers say, "The more you buy, the more you save!"

    Apple you suck.

After noticing some scraping on bottom of my 06 MacBook, I proceeded to remove & inspect the battery, come to find out the battery is physically bloated (warped) & leaking a very five white powder that entirely covered the cavity where the battery resides. I proceeded to contact Apple support, I very POLITELY explained the issue, the battery technician that tech support transferred me to acknowledge that the battery was defective and recommended that I discontinue using the battery altogether, (without me asking) the technician proceeded to try to get the battery replaced free of charge as a defective battery which HE (as a battery technician) concluded it was. He eventually transferred me to a customer service representative (Michelle); Michelle refused to acknowledge that we were dealing with a defective product and refused to allow for the free of charge exchange, she instead offered a $30 Apple store discount as a “we’re sorry for the inconvenience and the fact that your battery is about to blow up” apology. Instead of accepting I very POLITELY refused the discount coupon & again very calmly AND politely proceeded to state the case that this was a defective battery, at which point the Apple customer service rep. (in a very polite demeanor non the less) proceeded to say good-bye & hang up the phone on me while I was in mid sentence, you have to LOVE good costumer service.

Bottom line is; I have a deformed/defective MacBook battery half way to a achieving critical mass, full breach, blowup, fire, what have you & the Apple customer service reps are not willing to even acknowledge that this a defective battery, regardless of what the tech support technician (who happens to handle battery issues) says.

Do I have to leave the battery in and wait for the laptop to set itself on fire before Apple will acknowledge that we’re dealing with a defective battery, and decides to be more proactive with this issue?

Needless to say as an Apple user (since 2001) I am VERY disappointed & dissatisfied with Apple & its “customer support”.

    Are MacBook batteries safe?!?!

So sorry to hear that Jason, it sounds awful....

I have both a Macbook (white) and Powerbook G4 and I can understand your frustration. While the Macbook suffered from lack of charge on an earlier version battery (which luckily got replaced free of charge cos it was a listed problem), the Powerbook was notorious for getting too hot...enough to cook an egg! So I had to spend a bit of money just to get a fan-cooler for it, in case it broke. I mean it works and I'd recommend you do the same to stop it from happening again. I'd say this to everyone else too...saves you a lot of hassle in the long run.

Another thought... post Craig's List. Maybe someone's got a dead MacBook laying around and it's got a perfectly good battery in it they'd be willing to give or sell to you cheap ::shrug::

Whoa, I just went through this with my MBP 15" last time I went back to the States. The guys at the Apple Store would not do it, but I managed to get a really nice customer support rep via their phone support. Took lots of hold time while she called around, but eventually, she hooked me up with a guy that said "no problem!".  Try the US support! I'm pretty sure if it's bulging and looking like it's gonna explode they'll do something...

oh my damn!!  I bought my notebook about 15 months ago.  I was going to get a macbook, but I couldn't see the cost and why black was so much more costly.  I'm glad I didn't.  I thought their CS was supposed to be so great.
If you have to be escalated to a call center in another country, it should be the home nation of the company.

It's time for you to put pen to paper and write and not just emails.  I'd go thru their hierarchy (a letter to Jobs would never get anywhere), find a vp, and send him or her a letter.  Is there a tech section in the newspaper?  I'd email or write the reporter that handles tech, too.  Scream shout jump up and down!
