Hosting and directing a reality documentary film for an Environmental Protection Project - reforestration along Dongjiang River

May 10-14 went up to Guangdong to participate and film the plantation 森林保護和重新造林 (a Reforestation project sponsored by Heroes2, a Hong Kong environmental social enterprise) happening at Lashi Village. It was a wonderful experience for me to understand more about the reforestation projects happening along Dongiang river, to experience the life as a farmer in the local village, and see the beautiful scenary in Dongjing River Basin.

In order to improve the secondary tropical forests in Dongjing River Basin, a cooperative partnership has been established between Heroes2 and Guangdong Academy of Forestry. By applying Heroes’s “Buy-one, Plant-one” policy, GAF is sponsored to implement an afforestation/reforestation project in a natural village (Lashi Village) of Dongjiang River Basin by using a community-based management approach. Lashi Village currently has a total area of 160 ha of degraded forestland that has not been planted due to the lack of funds and low income. The local residents and officials have high enthusiasm in participating in afforestation/reforestation project that could generate high economic, social, and environmental benefits. The planting of proposed 59 species of trees, including valuable timber-use trees, indigenous trees, and non-woody trees, could apparently meet the requirement since it has the potential to lead to an increase in economic income for the local residents, an improvement of forest quality and biodiversity, and a subsequent decrease in carbon emission and climate mitigation.
