Movie Review: Men Suddenly in Love/猛男滾死隊

I feel kind of stupid posting this in the midst of what’s happening in Japan, but here it is.

No one will ever accuse Wong Jing of being a great filmmaker, much less convict him of any such charges.

With rare ex...Read more

Cutting Lacerda’s Neck

Guitars are almost useless without a neck. Lacerda needs a neck.

Necks are fairly simple to make.

Then again, so are free throws, at least in design. It’s the execution that gets you.

To put it differently, it’s not hard to do right. It’s just real easy to do wrong.

Lacerda is using ‘bolt on’ construction, which means the neck is bolted (or screwed) onto the body. That’s why you need a neck pocket; its the place the neck sits.Read more

CNY Movie Review: Mr. & Mrs. Incredible/神奇俠侶

The third and final CNY movie review of 2011.

Sadly, it took me until last week to see Mr. & Mrs. Incredible/神奇俠侶, but at least I was lucky enough to have a (mostly) empty theatre. More on that later.

This was probably my most looked-forward-to (?) film of the 2011 CNY season, due mostly to a number of really funny te...Read more

Movie Review: What Women Want/我知女人心

Hmmmm… A China-friendly remake of a Mel Gibson romantic comedy starring Andy Lau. Released on Chinese Valentine’s Day.Not exactly ticking off points on my must-see checklist.Luckily, What Women Want/我知女人心 was a Dynasty film.As well it should have been.So at least I could vent my frustrations in r...Read more

CNY Movie Review: All’s Well Ends Well 2011/最強囍事

This was the second CNY film I watched, and thank goodness it didn’t turn out to be #2. ******** The history of the AWEWfranchise has been… uneven. The 2009 iteration (gotta make the studen...Read more

CNY Movie Review: I Love Hong Kong/我愛HK開心萬歲

I saw this movie on New Year’s Day at the Dynasty.

I had pretty low hopes for it, since I don’t watch TV, let alone TVB.  Last year’s 72 Tenants of Prosperity was good, but a lot of the entertainment value of the film was lo...Read more

Painting Lacerda

A weird shape.

An odd coating.

We need something unique for the paint.

Something outrageous, yet evocative of the past.

Oh, it has to be cheap and available, too.

Sadly, there’s no way I can paint a guitar with my ex-girlfriend.

Lacerda’s Coverage

Something to keep in mind: While I have split this project up into several blog entries, and stretched those across several weeks, most of this work was actually done in under two days. Still, I have my reasons for drawing this thing out.

Let’s talk about the finish on this guitar.

Especially since you’re about to see it.

As I have mentioned, I wasn’t trying to be really careful with the wood on this build. The edges of the pieces weren’t perfectly flush, an...Read more

Carving Lacerda

Lacerda needs cavities. Specifically, it needs pickup cavities, a control cavity, a toggle switch cavity, and an input jack cavity.

So we must do these things.

First, we sketch out the cavities on the back.

The triangular shape is the control cavity, and the lower one is for a  **recessed input jack like you find on Strat...Read more

A Rare Smile

Sometimes God, in his beneficence,  gives me a good laugh.

This one is so funny on so many levels and in so many ways that I just couldn’t help but burst out laughing right in the street.

Nice to see the Association of North American...Read more
