I [heart] Purpleheart

This photograph has not been altered. Purpleheart, or peltogyneas it is known botanically, is naturally purple in color. It grows in the northern-central region of the Brazilian Amazon in South America and tropical regions of Central America.Heat will increase the vividness of the color.

You can make guitar necks out of purpleheart. Or, more specifically, Warmothmakes guitar necks out of purpleheart. They're great necks. They're not cheap.

They're not expensive either, they're just worth it.

Just like the guitar bodies Warmoth makes. I want a purpleheart neck to go on a body like this one: This is called a Soloist. You can order them with all kinds of pickup options (the hole in the middle of the top). This one has a 'single bridge humbucker' rout. It's very reminiscent of the 1980s, when guitar playing was a lot like track and field or gymnastics; it was all about speed and difficulty of execution.

I have the body, and have started painting it white. It already looks better than the photo below (it's got more paint on it), which was taken to illustrate how it will look when assembled: The pickup and its mounting ring are white for a reason. The volume knob (which is just set on top of the guitar; I have yet to decide where it will go) is purple for a reason too. The same reason, in fact. But in looking at this, I really like how simple and stripped-down it is.

Say what you want about the 1980s, but a lot of people made some very good music with guitars this simple, Eddie Van Halen being chief among them. It was he, in fact, who started this trend. Guitars like this require you to actuallyplay the damn thing; whatever sounds you want to get from them must be achieved with your hands, not electronics. Guitars like this make you a better player. The guitar will be painted further, but that's to remain a secret/surprise. For this guitar, I will have a neck made of purpleheart. It will be shaped like this one. In fact, this one is purpleheart, but it was photographed when freshly made, so it looks brown. A little UV exposure and it will purple right back up.Mine will have black dots, not white and the heel (the left end) will be square, not rounded. Which I am sure is a lot more important to me than you.

Oh oh, another paean to wood lust! I know purple heart well; remember, I've been hanging out with the carpenter-furniture maker guy for over a quarter century. Some of the fancy homes he worked on had very decorative floors and used purple heart edging for decorative purposes. So, he ended up with some purple heart scraps to play with. He used it as edging on one of the coffee tables he make out of other assorted hardwood flooring scraps. Its a gorgeous wood that no photograph will ever do justice to.
