Martial Arts question for Fighting Choreography to all the fighters!

Now guys, as you know I doing the first action martial arts feature of Belgium! Reiki The Movie!

Now the project grew and lately we have two fighting choreographers with years of experience,

those guys are really good! They know what they but the question that I have is actually this.

Some movements that were pretty cool, where taken off the fighting because they weren't too realistic, meaning no real martial artist would do that in a real fight, but that brings this issue: should we keep it 100% realistic so that martial artists that watch the movie would be happy and amazed, or should we keep some impressive fantasy movements?

What are you advice on these things?

Do we always keep the movements as real as possible or can we add show?

What's the best way to go guys?

Easy answer, keep it real. There's nothing worse that fighters flying or doing things that everybody know are not possible. The audience is not stupid , give them something 100% real and they will be amazed

I'd agree with them except for two things. 1 the actors you have aren't really martial artists right? So the real moves that would be able to impress people they probably won't be able to do so they'll be left with some movements that are pretty good but nothing spectacular. 2. The movie's a bit of a fantasy movie right? So unrealistic moves fit into the story line, unrealistic moves in a fantasy movie help add to the grandness of the characters and that they're not quite like everyone else. At least in my opinnion. Plus a lot of "real" moves done in movies people wouldn't use in real life anyway since a real fight would be pretty simple with just like a front kick and grappling more often than anything else. I say as long as the fights don't look cheesy and they fit into the storyline of the movie do whatever looks cool. But don't try to make your actors do moves they can't pull off well, because once it's on film it's really easy to see who really knows what they're doing and who doesn't.

I think it depends on the context of the film. Would "Wong Fei Hung" have been the same without the "No Shadow Kick" move? In the context of that film, it made sense. In the context of another film that move wouldn't. If it fits within the world you are creating then it will work. Look at the Matrix -- crazy flying kung fu makes sense given the world that was created in that film. If your world doesn't mesh with the actions that are taking place within it, then it will not work. I think it is less of an issue of whether or not the moves look cool or not. It is more related to how plausible they are given the system you are creating for your characters.
