DJ Box 09 Miss YellowIt was during one of the many down times on the set of a TVB show that actress Tung Tung Wong decided to pick up a new hobby. Inspired by her love for clubbing and dance music she learned how to DJ from a friend, Ryan Li, and after a year of practice played her first gig at the now defunct Club Magazine in October 2007 – transforming herself into Miss Yellow. Since then, DJ Miss Yellow and her signature platinum-dyed cropped locks have been bouncing around town playing a mash-up of electro, hip-hop, rock and dubstep to clubbers in this city and beyond. Whether it’s her good looks (a reminder of Wong’s photogenic past spent as a model and Miss Hong Kong contestant) or bubbly attitude, she’s built up a sizeable fan base – and as well as playing regularly at Volar she recently opened for Fatboy Slim. We squatted down with her to find out about her loves and gripes.

Shining. Busy. Polluted. 

Best and worst things about the nightlife scene in Hong Kong?

The best thing is that Hong Kong is small and there are many clubs close together. You can listen to different kinds of music in one night and switch around to different clubs until you find what you like. The worst thing is that people’s tastes are a bit commercial. Many clubs play the same kind of music. It’s hard to find a club that’s playing a different genre like drum’n’bass or real hip-hop. 

What’s the most memorable set you’ve ever played?

The show I played with A-Trak. It was the first time playing with a famous international DJ. I took one month to prepare for it! 

Top three tracks at the moment?

Soulwax’s  E Talking, The Chemical Brothers’  Star Guitar and Madonna’s Holiday. 

Which DJ have you always wanted to play alongside?

Justice or Daft Punk. 

Track to get people dancing?

Wolfgang Gartner’s  Wolfgang’s 5th Symphony. 

Most memorable club in Hong Kong?

Cliq, since all the Pimpin’ Aint Easy shows were there. 

Where would you most like to play a set?

I’d love to play a huge outdoor festival with tens of thousands of people in the audience, huge speakers and being able to see the sunset while I’m playing. 

First album you remember?

It was a cassette recorded by my aunt as a gift to go along with the Walkman she gave me. She recorded songs on it for me and it was the first time I wore headphones and was able to listen to music that way. I still remember that feeling. 

Plans for 2011 and beyond?

I don’t have a plan. Usually I go with the flow. I’m just starting to setup my own “mini-studio” in my apartment, so maybe I’ll start making my own music.

什麼是香港夜生活的好與壞?

香港最好之處是夠細﹐很多酒吧和夜總會都在附近。在一夜之間﹐可以聽到不同的音樂﹐還可以到處去不同的酒吧﹐直到找自己喜歡的地方。

最壞的是很多人的口味都商業化了。很多酒吧都播放同樣的音樂。想找一個播放不同類型音樂的酒吧﹐如drum'n'bass或是真正的嘻哈﹐真是很難。

妳表演最難忘的混音曲目是什麼?

與A-Track一起表演的時候。當時是我第一次與著名的國際DJ同臺演出。為了這場演出﹐我用了一個月時間去準備!

現在﹐妳最喜歡的三個歌曲是什麼?

Soulwax's E Talking, The Chemical Brothers' Star Guitar and Madonna'sHoliday.

妳最想與哪個 DJ一起演出?

妳記得的第一張專輯是什麼?

盒式磁帶﹐是阿姨與隨身聽一起送給我。當時她為我錄制一些歌曲﹐亦是我第一次戴上耳機聽音樂。我還記得當時的感覺。

2011年以後有什麼計劃?

沒有計劃。我通常都會順其自然。我剛剛開始在我公寓裡設立自己的"迷你錄音室"﹐所以我將來可能開始製造自己的音樂。
