Here is someone offering a bit of sanity in this crazy world.  This is a lecture that Richard Dawkins, the author of The God Delusion, gave at UC Berkeley recently.

I respect everyone's right to their beliefs. But personally, I believe in God.

very good arguments made here - I particularly liked how he compared religion with geographic location and dinosaurs extinction. I got to say i am also a number 6 on the religosity scale... and yes, the comedian was great!

The comedian makes a really good point about the Abrahamic religions (Muslim, Christian, and Judaism) ..
history shows that mass killings have occurred in the name of these three, yet each claims to be "peaceful." Bah!

God has always been the default position before scientific discoveries found a natural reason.  And I really appreciate the enlightening presentation using the method of substituting God-speak in other contexts to demonstrate how unacceptable on a logical level they are.  But then again I know a lot of smart people who have a belief in God, and as Paul Tillich put it, made the leap of faith.  And it does satisfy something within them and gives them comfort.  Me?  I'm at least a 5 and sometimes a 6.  What disturbs me is the misuse and distortion of religious beliefs to support aggression.  Yeah, he's right, when you read the Bible nothing could be further from the truth than to say "God is Love."

i like the fact that he explicitly pointed out the 'just because I don't understand evolution, therefore I think god must have done it'  argument...    if they said the same thing about physics or chemistry as they did about biology,  we'd still be in the pre-industrial age... or worse yet appeasing volcanos and praying to thunder clouds... :-P
