It used to depress me how it seemed that being an actor doomed you to having a terrible personal life. When I'd hear that so-and-so celeb was getting hitched with so-and-so star, my first response would be - how long's that gonna last? It seemed to me a career as an actor meant a life of part-time marriages and ugly divorces.
So I was sad to hear that Paul Newman died today.
I respected him for being a movie star who was a fine actor. But even though he won an Oscar for The Color Of Money what I admired most about him was how he handled his personal life and marriage to Joanne Woodward, who he was married to for 50 years.
He lived far away from the Hollywood lifestyle in Connecticut and was devoted to his wife and family. He believed in monogamy and when asked about infidelity he said, "Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?"
You were a class act Mr. Newman.
