Amen Brother
Blogged that like 3, 4 years back. The dude doesn't know why the Amen break rocks? It's got an unmistakeable sound, tinny and boxy, and it's got groove, and the drums are seriously in-time.
Did you know that the drummer in the Winstons was the front man? How many bands have their drummer as their front man? None. That's why they made the most sampled break ever. The drums were center stage.
Hehehehe. Amen jungle, back in the day. Pwnage.
and I have tried to re-record the Amen break, with various drummers, in various studios. I still have no idea how they made sound quite like that, although I can get close by using 60s Zyn cymbals (aluminium in the mix), and using a deep brass snare done up super tight, and belted to death. The kick is still somewhat beyond me.
How the drums were recorded needs to be found out from the engineer who did it, and when it is, I wanna know.
