Upcoming Concert I'm Performing

I've spent this past week preparing for a really exciting concert. We had rehearsals, worked out schedules and program notes, and even shot and edited a commercial for a Chinese TV station in only a day. I've never put so much work into preparing and putting on a concert, but it will be totally worth it, as it's going to be an awesome event. This unique concert is happening in only two weeks on Saturday, June 8th, and I still have to do a press conference this week along with practicing all the music I'll be playing.

It will be a great opportunity to see me play a collection of unusual instruments, including Chinese wind instruments (Bawu and Hulu),
various Chinese percussion,

as well as piano. We'll be playing original works composed by myself and my friend Paul Kwo (who will also be playing piano and some percussion), in addition to some improvisations of music that has yet to be created. We also have some fantastic performers lined up who will be playing Erhu (the Chinese fiddle), Flute/Dizi (Chinese flute), Violin, and Cello.

Wow, this looks awesome. If I obtain a music teaching job this fall, I definitely plan on exposing my students to more Eastern music.

sounds great - whish you a lot of success with it :) I'd wish to learn how to play the dizi - I love its sound and I loved to play flute as a child...

George Shaw is a rapidly rising composer who has worked on Hollywood and independent films. He is a versatile composer with the skill for crafting rich orchestral tapestries as well as producing cutting edge sounds to match the visual images in movies.

Recent films include MARCUS, which was recently released on DVD by Warner Home Videos, and the score album released by Movie Score Media. J-OK’EL (starring Tom Parker, Dee Wallace) had a theatrical release in Mexico, and the music won a Gold Medal for Artistic Excellence at the 2007 Park City Film Music Festival, which claims to be "the first film festival in the world singularly recognizing the contributions of composers and their music to film." PURITY also won a Gold Medal for Best Impact of Music at the 2006 festival, in addition to two Gold Medals Shaw garnered for Best Impact of Music in animation and a Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Film Music Composition for Independent Film.

In addition to composing, Shaw has orchestrated on a number of films, including GHOST RIDER (starring Nicolas Cage), DARWIN AWARDS (starring Winona Ryder, Joseph Fiennes), KISS, KISS, BANG, BANG (starring Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr.), ROBOTECH: THE SHADOW CHRONICLES, and CHASING GHOSTS (starring Michael Madsen). Shaw’s string arrangements and orchestrations can also be heard on Nural’s debut album “The Weight of the World” from Hopeless Records, and singer/songwriter Kari Kimmel’s first solo album “A Life in the Day.”

Shaw studied composition and film scoring at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, taking part in its world-class Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program. He also participated in the 2004 ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop and the 9th Annual BMI Conducting Workshop. Shaw is a 2007 fellow in Film Independent’s Project: Involve, a filmmaker mentorship program that paired him with Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Lennertz (MEDAL OF HONOR: EUROPEAN ASSAULT, SUPERNATURAL, DR. DOOLITTLE 3).

Shaw plays clarinet, piano, guitar, and a variety of exotic woodwind instruments from around the world. George resides in Los Angeles, where he can surf and snowboard in the same day.
