  • R.I.P. JIN LY

    Friday, Oct 2, 2009 7:54PM / Standard Entry / Members only

I learned yesterday that one of my best friends, Jin Ly, passed away. Her body was found in ParisSeine river two days ago. Her drowning was apparently an accident while she was alone after a boat party last Saturday. She was 31.

    Jin in Pusan (October 2006)

Jin grew up in Seoul, and left for Paris in 1999 where she lived without documentation.  She learned French by herself. She directed "Trans# : Working Title", an experimental road movie/docu-fiction inspired by her own life and experiences and shot in Korean, French and English.  She filmed herself travelling and meeting people from South Korea to Paris and back, via Beijing and other places. This self-financed DIY movie  was selected in 2008 in a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival (L'ACID - an association for the release of indie movie).

Check out the pre-editing teaser of  "Trans# : Working Title" below...

Here is a Jin Ly interview from the website Nisimazine in which she talks about her very unusual movie and illustrates her complex, tormented and fascinating personality.

What a tragic loss.   I am sorry for your loss.  She should have had so much more time to live her life.  So much more to offer the world.
