On Tuesday night, the 'Live N Loud' festival was held at the Asia World Expo Center. A bunch of us went up to check it out. The Typhoon was rolling into town, and it was running late, but I was surprised they got a pretty good turn out:
I'm not a big 'alternative rock' or whatever the genre that fits these bands is, but I recognized Simple Plan, hypothetically the 'headline' and one song by 'One Republic'...
so to cut to the chase, here's two videos I did of those two bands:
I was impressed w/ Simple Plan, even though they didn't go on til about midnight, when a lot of people had left, they still had a lot of energy... and as you can see in the video, they actually made a BIG effort to speak in Cantonese to the crowd... quite an effort!
btw, I actually edited that video on the train home, so I uploaded it to youtube like 1 hour after it happened... for at least part of today it was the #1 viewed music clip on youtube HK! ;-)
Anyway, here's some of my pics -
Dominic Lau was the host... for some reason they had like 15-20 minute breaks between the bands to set up... poor Dom had to fill the time... :-P
They really ought to have invested in some moving platforms so they could have cut set up time... just roll in the new drum kit and go (or share one!) the show went quite late (i heard it ended after 1, i took off before simple plan finished cause i didn't want to miss the last train!)
Lost Prophets: This guy was kind of an A$$... (he even said it himself..) he was like "hong Kong... we used to own you... if you don't scream for me, we'll own you again...' way to go British Imperialist! :-P
Actually the keyboardist in white was the most funny... he was the yang to the guy in black's yin... but he got like WAY into it for a keyboardist.. jumping around, doing kicks in the air, stepping on the amp to sing, etc.... i think he forgets sometimes and thinks he's the lead singer... entertaining... :-P
One Republic: Seemed like everyone just wanted to hear 'Apologize'... they were rather well received by the crowd, but i felt like they were a bit too much of a Coldplay clone. :-P
Sideshow Bob has escaped and is now touring Asia...
Most of my friends left by the time Simple Plan came out, it was too bad. they rocked it pretty hard.
the BFD i went to (like...12 years ago?) had a rotating stage, so they could prep in the back and rotate out a few minutes after the last band left the stage... (kind of like PSL... i mean pimental hall).
haha nice. i saw a buncha those bands here recently too. actually it's really normal and standard to have at LEAST 15-20 min between each act at rock festivals. sometimes it takes even longer.. which gets rather irritating. especially if it's not even a rock concert (kanye took like 45 min or something grr..though his set was crazy I guess). but ya usually it takes awhile for bands to switch their instruments out, tune, etc. the fastest transition i've seen was at BFD 2008 where they actually had 2 stages side by side for the main area and one band could set up while the other was finishing up. that was cool! no or little wait time! but it took up a huge amount of space and double the lighting, equipment, etc. and was a bit confusing where to look at times if standing far away in the crowd =P
plus there isn't any entertainment during wait times. that's time to go smoke, buy some drinks, go to the bathroom, walk around, hang out w/friends... once in awhile they have something random like.. txt msgs that can be shown on some big screen which always are kinda entertaining. and background recorded music (if ppl are rowdy enough they might be signing/dancing to it actually..usually teenie bopper thing). so ya that's pretty much standard for a western rock festival... at least u guys did have an MC in between still!
