  One thing I like about the digital age – is that when people *do* make the effort to buy music – the sales are packaged up with a huge amount of data: When & where & what file formats & with which other tunes from other labels were bought at the same time.

  
  

  Thankfully my distributor (Beatport) makes all this available in real time and for me, this data is actually the reward for making the music, and the breakdown of where my stuff is being consumed is by far the intriguing. So sales volume by territory for my most recent single:

  That's the 2010 world tour sorted out then :) ... Strangely missing are the UK and Germany, but I guess they have their own big local scenes and do not look so far afield for new music. I made no attempt to promote this record except on my blogs and did not try to get any press. Part laziness, part trying-to-get-above-the-background-noise requires more energy than I have to commit to music these days.

• finding wisdom in the strangest of places

  Sat watching some movies on the flight back from Thailand; I am not a film snob at 30,000 feet so switched over to watch the end of Pirates of the Caribbean III ... 

  
  

  I must've missed the following dialog at the cinema – was probably asleep. Johnny Depp's first line is not necessary but helps with context, it's the second line (delivered by Keith Richards no less) which caught my attention and brought a smile to my face:

• A Measurement of Success

  Just figured it out ... music sales, press & blog columns, Twitter traffic and even YouTube hits are no longer the benchmark for what's buzzing in music.

  
  

  No... easily the most reliable benchmark of popularity for music is how many seeders & leechers your torrent has in conjunctions with how many download sites & warez forums are posting RAR links.

  
  

  In which case Juliet & Auerbach are the two most popular songs I've ever done ... It's actually quite cool poking around some of the more sordid corners of the internet seeing where my music has ended up: From a warez site in Romania to a techno forum in Chile, even a couple of random YouTube uploads featuring – rather annoyingly – film posters of Leonardo DiCaprio as the graphic for Juliet... gross... not what I had in mind.
