It's a sponge pudding with raisins in it. We pissed ourselves laughing as kids too. It's a regular classic school dinner in the UK.

It is a pudding of some sorts. But for people who see it for the first tim will be like constantly rubbing their eyes to convince themshelves that they are not seeing things. Hahahaha. I remember doing that. You just burst out laughing and everyone in the grocery store thinks you are some crazy girl ...

Hahaha...yes, Spotted Dick is a traditional British dessert.....pity I didn't have much of it when I was living there all those years ago.

There's obviously something peculiar about names of British foods as they often don't mean what you think they are. Like Yorkshire Pudding, Cornish Pasty and Shepherd's Pie. Yorkshire Pudding is not a dessert pudding - its an addition as part of roast dinner served with a bit of gravy (made of a thin tart-like crust) like you with the sprouts or vegetables. Cornish Pasty is basically a British pie in the shape of a crescent-shaped samosa taken as a meal - traditionally it was made in Cornwall and eaten by the coal miners who lived there (hence Cornish - and not because it has corn). And lastly Shepherd's Pie or (Cottage Pie) is a pie with lamb or beef mince and mashed potato on the top. The name is misleading as it did not originate from shepherds or that because shepherds ate them - but that there was lamb in the recipe, hence Shepherds Pie.

"This is a traditional British sponge pudding made with golden syrup, suet and raisins. Best served hot with custard."

The British weren't empire building; they were looking for edible food!
