Coming soon!|即將開鑼!|即将开锣!|Coming soon!

Aug 31, 2011 - I'm excited that Hong Kong's first professional boxing match is coming soon. I am even more excited that two fighters from my gym will be fighting as well! Read below about how they are preparing for the big night! See you there!

On August 22nd, a month before they will fight at Thursday Night Fights on September 22nd, Rex Tso and Bresson Ngoma will travel to the Philippines for top-notch world-class training. Where will they train? Who will train them?

Rick Staheli.

Rick who? Well, maybe you haven’t heard of him. Aside from Freddie Roach and Cus D’Amato, trainers are never as famous as the boxers they train. But perhaps you've heard of some of the people he has trained.

Ever hear of Manny Pacquiao? That’s right, pound-for-pound the best boxer in the world and the first person to ever win championship belts in eight different weight classes. Rick was Manny’s trainer when he beat Chatchai Sasakul to win the WBC Flyweight championship, his first major world title, in September 1998.

Born in New York, Rick Staheli went to the Philippines when he joined the US Air Force. He started to box as an amateur while in the Air Force, compiling a 12-0 record. He wanted to turn pro, but that was against the rules – he was in the Air Force, serving in a special unit called Pararescue.

When he left the Air Force, Rick had already stopped boxing, but continued his involvement in the sport. He began to train, manage, and promote Asian boxers, including some national (Philippines) and regional (Asian) champions. In addition to Manny Pacquiao, Rick trained two other world champions: Manny Melchor (IBF Miniflyweight), and Zhang Xi Yan (WIBA Bantamweight).

But perhaps Rick’s beloved champ is the one who’s closest to home: his 13 year old daughter. She fights against boys, and has beaten every single one of them. All 35 of them! Just 13 years old and she has a 35-0 record, fighting against boys, no doubt because her father trained her since she was just 19 months old!

When Rex and Bresson go to the Philippines, they will be in good hands. And you’d better believe that when they come back, they will be much better boxers. If you thought they were good boxers before, just wait until you see them fight at Thursday Night Boxing on September 22nd.

Rick StaheliUPDATE! Bresson has arrived in the Philippines, where he will embark on a month-long training camp under the tutelage of famed trainer Rick Staheli.

It will be a tough time for Bresson. He will be away from his pregnant wife, who’s due to give birth in October. His loyal students at DEF Boxing will also feel his absence. But most importantly, it’s a very tough training camp.

Bresson has been at training camp for just a few days, but Rick already likes what he sees: “This boxer can be molded into a world champ.”

However, Bresson has a lot of catching up to do, as “His biggest problem is his conditioning, which I consider a minor problem,” explains the seasoned trainer. On the topic of Bresson’s discouraging loss in China this May, “He basically got outworked by a guy with less ability than him. That doesn’t happen on my watch… I push all my boxers very hard and make it perfectly clear that it’s not only about talent, but brains and conditioning play a big part in making them a champion. He has responded very well so far.”

Rick goes on to explain that “He has minor technical problems, but nothing that can’t be fixed. He’s a fast learner, which is important at his age, considering I’m throwing the information at a fast rate.”

Rick, who has trained a multitude of boxers and produced champion after champion, thinks very highly of Bresson, saying, “It took about 12 seconds to see that Bresson has serious boxing skills. I really like his skill set. Recently, I’ve been training two Filipino fighters – one is Asia Champ, #7 in the world, and has a record of 21 wins, 0 losses, and 20 knockouts. The other is Filipino Champ with 26 wins, two losses, and 17 knockouts. Bresson has more ability than both of those world class fighters.”

I bet you can’t wait to see the new and improved Bresson. I know I can’t.
