    MWC Logo

Mobile World Congress or MWC as it is commonly known, is the world's largest mobile trade show held in March every year. In 2013 over 65,000 people flew in to take part in the event and over 1,500 mobile or mobile related companies exhibited at the event. As you can imagine it was quite a show and I was lucky enough to be flown over myself to help oversee the global PR campaign from mobile phone designer and producer ALCATEL.

The event was held at the striking modern Fira Gran Via building which you can see here:

In the incredible, historical and picturesque city of Barcelona in Spain:

Lots of advantages of attending a conference in Barcelona - one being the incredible architecture and sights and another being the amazingly delicious food, which I've put a few examples of here:

    Tomato Bread

    Paella con MariscoPulpitos
Well enough about the wonderful food, incredible environment and vibrant history of Barcelona (I didn't even touch on the football team...) how about the event itself? Well it was an enormous success for ALCATEL ONE TOUCH. We launched 6 brand new smartphones, which added to those we had previously announced at CES brought the grand total to 13 smartphones launched since January 2013. This very impressive feat, as well as the high quality and beautiful design of the new phones caused a large stir in the press and in all we counted over 2,000 articles about us in the press over the course of MWC.

The beautifully designed phones launched at MWC included the ONE TOUCH Star shown in Cranberry Pink here:

In addition to all the press excitement around the impressive new range phones, I also got my own little press buzz when someone recognised me in the background of one of the product videos as one of the hosts of Crazy from Kong - my youtube show where we review crazy Asian snack foods like Wasabi Kit Kat and Self-Freezing Coke.

The video was a review of the Idol X by The Verge. I've put it below and if you go to the youtube page you will see the comments referring to me and my show:

I get to do lots of fun things in my life and this was a pretty new one for me, as I recently got flown off to Vegas to attend CES (the world famous Consumer Electronics Show) by ALCATEL ONE TOUCH as their representative for global PR. The show is pretty awesome and a big deal in the world of gadgets as it is generally the place where everyone from TV to camera to computer to car companies come to launch their latest and greatest products.

That is exactly what we were there for too - to launch a whole series of cutting-edge new smart phones. My job was to make sure that the message got out to the press and considering somewhere in the region of 400 articles appeared online, I believe the press did indeed receive the message and were very interested in the new line-up of ALCATEL ONE TOUCH smartphones!

One of the showcase products we got to announce at CES was the world's slimmest smartphone - the ONE TOUCH Idol Ultra - measuring in at a mere 6.45mm thin. You can check out Engadget's review of the phone below:

  • Ghost Style x Arne Venema HOT! MV - Day II @ Talent Asia Office

    Monday, Oct 4, 2010 5:44AM / Standard Entry

Things really heated up on the 2nd day of our music video shoot and I mean REALLY heated up!
I was particularly happy with the location for the MV shoot this day, because the entire thing takes place in my office, mostly in my room and a fair amount right on my desk.
It basically features two members of staff in the office, a senior executive type, who is approached by a new junior member of staff, who gives her some "persuasive reasoning" as to why she should experience quick advancement in the company...
    Behold:

    This is MY DESK!!!

In case any of you doubted that they were really going for it:

I was actually under the desk during these shots, as I had to help throw paper over the desk for one of the scenes and then hide under the table so the camera wouldn't catch me. The most enjoyable place I've ever had to hide in my life...
After the first series of shots, it was shoot again and again all day. 4 of the happiest hours of my life!
The girls (Diane Wu & Uny Chiu) were amazing and incredibly into it. There were several shots were we had to call cut 3 or 4 times before the action came to a finish.
Here they are taking a break between shots:
And here's Uny with Max Lam, our make-up artist:
Then it was time to start up again.
Here is Arne giving the girls some direction:
I'll put up the full sequence of events here again in wide shots this time, so you can really see the action taking place:
    Diane is so pretty!

We all couldn't believe how awesome Uny was throughout the shoot. As a quiet and shy girl normally, we were initially worried and then later amazed at how confident and aggressive she was throughout the shoot! Her energy helped make the shoot really hot! Great work Uny!!!

    Diane taking control:

    But not for long...

Here are a couple of shots of Arne capturing the action:
Somehow, he always ends up on the floor in every shoot we do:
Taking a break. Uny looks lovely. Arne looks incredibly smug! You can almost feel him patting himself on the back for coming up with the concept for this one ;-)
I leave you with this photo, probably my favourite still shot from the full day's shoot in the Talent Asia office:
As you can probably imagine, I haven't really been able to work properly in the office since we completed this day's shooting. Everytime I look at my desk my mind drifts off to somewhere else...
Keep your eyes out for shooting days 3 - 6!!!
    Lots more excitement to come!

  • Ghost Style x Arne Venema - New Song + HOT! Music Video - Day I

    Thursday, Sep 30, 2010 8:02PM / Standard Entry

Not so long ago Ghost Style and Arne Venema decided to get together and write some really interesting music, consisting of Ghost Style rapping and singing over fast drum'n'bass beats with a bit of electro thrown in for good measure. This sounded like a pretty cool project to me. And then it got even better...
They decided to shoot one of the most awesome music videos that I've ever heard of and then invited me to be a part of the production. Well I can tell you this all made me pretty happy and the shoots were not disappointing at all, quite the opposite, they were better than I expected!
Well enough of the suspense, allow me to share with you some of the photos from Day 1 of the shoot and you can see for yourselves.
Our stars of day 1 of the shoot meeting for the first time:
    They got on very well:
    And so the video commenced:
    With boats sailing by...
and the sun setting in the sky...
    it got pretty heated:
Director Arne Venema, Co-producer Joe Fiorello & AD Michael Chan got to work:
    Dolly shot:

    tracking:

Well I can tell you that day 1 was VERY enjoyable!
Apart from the obvious excitement of the day, we also managed to attract a large number of "interesting visitors" including an ageing Indian man in traditional garb, an aggressive Australian photographer who was keen to join in on the filming and a 5 year old girl who burst out crying the moment she saw what was happening, but was only taken away from the scene after her mother did some serious shouting at the father to stop gawking!
Trust me, the shoot gets more exciting as it goes, so keep your eyes open for Days 2 - 5!!!
