Under The Radar 04: Dr. Steel

Singer/Composer:   Dr. Steel.

Dr. Steel is not unlike Marilyn Manson or Ziggy Pop in that he totally embodies a character.  He also has created a whole back story and world for his character to live in.  His live shows (of which I've only seen video clips) go well beyond just a band on a stage and are an extension of his entire back story.

Song: "Back and Forth" - I think it's got a good groove and a lot of character.

Video:  Shockingly - therer are apparently no "official" videos for him... Apparently he's reached out to fans to make videos for him... here is one example...

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YT_J5HRsIY.

Pesonally while it is impressive that he utilized a fan base to create videos, I would love to see a video featuring Dr. Steel with the character of his website.  I think that would be much more effect to reach a wider audience.

Audience:  Impresively, his act has motivated many people to join in both on stage and off to be a part of his "movement."  In an earlier blog I quoted someone talking about how you might just need a 1000 true fans to support a music career.  Dr. Steel would be a perfect candidate for that model and he definitely keeps up the store and "products" to support the effort.... The list of products is pretty astounding.

So - here is an example of an independent musician totally embracing commercialism in order to support creating the music they love.

You can visit Doctor Steel's World at his website:  www.doctorsteel.com

If you want a glimpse into his mise en scene, be sure to visit " The Dr. Steel Show."

how it relates: I think more and more we will see this kind of "event based" musicianship in the years to come as it will be more and moer difficult for artists to stand out as singers or players alone.

Every single person on this site is aware of at least one "event based" band.....    "Alive."  So the concept should be very familiar.  While their character were more closely blurring reality and fantasy than other examples - their "scene" and "event" was as important as the music itself.

This is not going to work for all musicans.  The charm of some muscians like alivenotdead's joyce leemay very well be the simplicity of the singer/audience connection.

On the other hand, I could see an act like alivenotdead's  tinkerchelgrowing into something like this eventually.  Her "act" is very well defined already.  But when I see her charming videos, what I see is how it could grow into something like this... though a totally different character and world.

Fully agree with this model working, that is, until too many people start doing it! The new DJ tour set up by Richie Hawtin embraces the performance-interaction as a product. Although it looks like him & his crew stepped right off the set of Logan's Run. And as you said, Alive did it to the max (so to speak). I wonder how many people on this site can actually name or sing one of their songs! Music no longer supports itself as a product, unfortunately. The day is coming where all media will be legally free for every consumer (with suitable hardware), and financed totally by advertising and - in small part - physical product tie-in.

Actually ... I just tried to follow through on the Dr Steel shop, none of the CDs, despite being advertised, are physical products (they point to digital download sites); none of the vinyl is available to buy, and apart from the Cafe Press items, all other products & toys bounce to a page which says 'vote / donate so this product can be made'. Good luck if he can pull that one off. I looked into making vinyl toys a couple years ago and all r&d and distribution cost / issues aside, the physical manufacturing is beyond the financial reach of (I'd say) almost all non-commercial musicians. Which defaults back to on-demand manufacturing sites like PrintFection and Cafe Press. One other thing, I bet 24 Herbs will sell more baseball caps & t-shirts than CDs this year. And that's not at all a fault with the music.

Dan - thanks for your investigating. Yes... The Dr. Steel gtroup (and it is a few people - I've spoken to his manaer before) definitely is putting out there what they want and hoping to motivate an audience to get them there. It's a perfect example of the "long tail" 1000 fans concept. Interesting observation about hats vs. CD's. I think you and I are in agreement of the shape of things to come... and I would not doubt that we share a trepidation for what that will mean.

No problem! Not trying to pick holes in the story, this whole subject is of huge interest to me and something I've been trying to fathom for the last several years. While I would love for music to support itself, the fact merchandising plays a much more important role seems the sad future. The costs (for an indie musician) for setting up vinyl or CD duplication runs are now replaced by t-shirts and baseball cap manufacturing. We're no better off now than we used to be! We do have a wider potential audience, but then again, so does everyone else :)
