220% increase in film submissions

The 34th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) has received a record number of film submissions with an increase of 220% in film submissions over the last year.

A total of 804 film projects were submitted online from

69 countries representing more than double the number of submissions from the previous year at 365 from 50 countries. Increased submissions were seen primarily from North and South America, Europe and Australia. Among the 804 film projects submitted, 602 of them were feature films.

With the introduction of the inaugural Short Film Competition for the 34th HKIFF in September 2009, submissions for short films grew by 342% from 59 to 202 . The HKIFF Short Film Competition will provide a significant opportunity for students and short film makers from around the world to participate in the official shorts section of the festival.

“With the record number of submissions, we are honored and proud that the international film community recognises the importance of the HKIFF and sees the value of the Festival as an exciting platform to discover and launch global films and filmmakers to Asia.” said Shaw Soo Wei, Executive Director of the HKIFF Society.

“Among the submitted films are some of the most innovative works we have seen in years, “ said Li Cheuk To, Artistic Director, HKIFF Society, “With such diversity and richness in the submissions, we will continue to multiply the vast opportunities for these dynamic films to reach a global audience.”
