Team News – Learning driving the McElrea Way: Part I

During the month of August, Wimobilize McElrea Racing ran a trip for some of its management, and partners of the racing team. The programme was sorted out at the famous Porsche Driving School situated along the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. It was all fun and games for four days, as the student drivers started from basic elements and went on to far more advanced techniques. The prestigious school is run by racing legend, Tomas Mezera and one of New Zelanders fastest drivers ever, Andy McElrea as the chief instructor.

Level 1 consisted of driving the whole fleet of different Porsche’s from the entry level Boxster, to the high performance 530bhp monster of a 911 turbo. In this level, drifting, road circuit driving, driving exercises, and car control were all addressed and quite low speeds. These activities were all carried out at various areas at the Mt Cotton training facility ranging from roads in the beautiful mountain ranges, to a wet piece of asphalt to simulate emergency conditions.

CEO of major team sponsor, Wimobilize, had this to say. “Driving cars this good, going fast, going sideways, driving fast.....all new things for me that I did for the first time last week!” exclaimed Stephen Lee. “It was an experience, I learned a lot about driving, and I can appreciate what drivers go through a little better now! They are quite mad.” Lee went on to say, “This is my first holiday without my family since I had kids!”

Level 2 consisted of a similar programme to level 1, though exercise were done on faster pieces of road, and higher speeds, for students to get a relatively for a higher speed. This worked out well for the students, Stephen Lee, first showing signs that some of these boardroom executives, had way more going for them than a good business venture.

McElrea driver, Yuey Tan, was present to oversee that the fellas were having a good time. “Stephen Lee was the first guy in our group to start pushing hard! By day 2, he had learned advanced braking techniques, and an ability to want to push the car. It was awesome! I remember when I first took this course in 2006, there was no way that I was pusing that hard!”

The first 2 levels of the Porsche Driving School is a good foundation to learn the art of driving a car, if becoming a better driver, is what you desire. Please email whatsup@yueytan.com.sg for more information.
