Movie Review: Split Second Murders/死神傻了

I am not supposed to be typing, but I wanted to get this up soon.

I loveHerman Yau.

For lots of reasons.

99% of them cinematic. He's the man behind more than a few of my favorite HK movie moments.

Untold Story.

Ebola Syndrome.

Walk In.

Gong Tau.The scene in Happy Family where Candy Lo Hau Yam (best profile photo on AnD) shows off the tattoo on her tummy.

Thank you, Herman.

And you too, Candy.

So I am a bigfan of Herman Yau.

And Candy Lo's navel.

Thank you again...

Seriously (?), I am a bigfan of Herman Yau.

He made Lethal Ninja.

I lovedthat movie. It was so much fun I didn't even have my usual apoplectic aversion to Eva Huang's cockeyed visage.

But let's try to focus...

I'm a huge Herman Yau fan.

At the same time, I am not, generally speaking, a fan of Fama.

The Chinese reads "We act as well as we rap."

Or Deep Ng:

Someonereallywants to be in Scud's next movie...

Or Chrissie Chow:

I should have listened to my mother and become a podiatrist.

And until last night, if you left me alone in a room with Siufay, I'd kill him and eat him (to be damn sure he was dead) just to rid the planet of his irredeemable and seemingly bottomless abrasive annoyance.

"What are you doing with that fork and knife... Aaaaaagggghhhh!!!"

So I went into the Movie Night screening of Split Second Murder/死神傻了 with more than a little trepidation (and nocough syrup, which only added to my fears).

Here we have a film rife with pop idols (of varying pedigree), one of the most irritating actors in Hong Kong, and the film debut of one of those "sleazy" leng mo.

I promise, Josie, I'll screw her if I can.Let me get to the heart of this thing:

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

NOW!!!

It's one of the best-directed pop idol films you'll eversee. It is full of magnificent little details/moments that keep you constantly grinning. There is never a dull moment, really, because you're sort of waiting to see what's next.

And not just during the Candy Lo cameo.

If I say that Siufay was bearable and Fama acted fairly well and Chrissie Chow was almost convincing as the schoolgirl-by-day/chicken-by-night, allthe credit goes to Herman Yau.

I never thought I could nothate Siufay, or could think that a leng mo was anything more than a waste of screen space (the reigning queens of whom rhyme with 'gotcha'), or that I could think anyone who was in Happy Funeral (except the old lady) could act.

THANK YOU, HERMAN YAU, FOR A VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE.

Thank you for making me feel like moving here just for the movies was a good idea after all.

Thank you for making me laugh, and for entertaining me with a very well-made film that I have been enthusiastically recommending to everyone I see.

I want to see this movie again i n theatres.

I will buy the DVD. While it's expensive.

It's not a great movie per se. But it is a great viewing experience.

Trust me. You will laugh a lot.

 You will be entertained.

You will be glad you saw it.

Support a local film that wholly deserves the support!

GO SEE IT! MORE THAN ONCE!

Anton - Is that a euphemism? Peachey - I am sincere. I loved this movie! Jaymee - I imagine I would rate him higher (Deeper?) if were a girl. But not in that pink wife-beater with the ribbon from a Special Olympics medal wrapped around my hand...
