My Hong Kong connection to Leslie Cheung

Hello Tracy (aka Snowduck), now visiting Hong Kong.  Read her recent blog entries to see some of the fun things she has been up to since her arrival (http://www.alivenotdead.com/snowduck/blog.html).

I just read your blog entry and see you were looking for Leslie's star on the Avenue of the Stars.  I know it is there because friends have sent me pictures of it.

I do have a direct connection with Leslie Cheung and Hong Kong even though I have never visited the city.  One of my poems, dedicated to Leslie, was placed together with a wreath laid by a friend at the Mandarin Hotel last April 1st as a memorial to Leslie.  It seems odd, but somehow fitting, that my words have preceded my actual physical presence in Hong Kong.  (My poem is the one underneath the heart-shaped wreath of white roses.)

Here is the text of the poem:

For Leslie

I whisper your name on the wind     —no answer. Studying the night sky, I wonder which star shines for you alone? My heart undone, I never expected to love you this much. No possibility of meeting in this life. What of the next?

Leslie has been much on my mind in recent days.  I've been watching his concert videos and reading about him as an actor and celebrity from a decidedly Queer Theory perspective.  I'll have more to say on the fruit of this research in the coming months.  Leslie is definitely a rich subject of inquiry, whatever perspective you examine him from.

your poem is very poetic and emotional. it has such a deep meaning. interesting how an arrangement of shosrt words can be so powerfuil. but again, anything from the true heart is, undeniably, always powerful. xo
