cousin, i'm sorry to use an expletive in my blog entry. don't be mad.
it was the only expression i could use to describe what i'm seeing this morning at my flat.
my son's eight-year old friend is over here and he is completely flummoxed when his head is not immersed in some kind of metal box, namely, a computer, nintendo, wii, or television set. he tried to throw a ball with my son a few minutes ago and he couldn't even muster that. i mean, he could throw the ball, but without any hope of it landing anywhere near my son, even at the distance of 10 feet! the idea of running around or playing tag or kicking a ball completely eludes him. the idea of a board game is equally alien.
he has no mastery over the physical world because of a complete failure to pursue any sporting or athletic activity. he is shockingly uncoordinated and inept when it comes to anything requiring muscle coordination, aim, endurance.
being what i'm like, i.e., vocal, judgmental, harsh, terrifying, i actually told the little boy i felt sorry for him because he is unable to enjoy life without having his brain sucked into an electric, metal box. he responded, "i don't want to come over to your house to play again". in my heart, i thought, "i hope he tells his mother what i've said, because she's a lame excuse for a parent"
his parents should be crucified for completely ignoring his physical, intellectual and spiritual formation.
i feel sorry for this kid. but his semi-lobotomized plight is typical of hong kong. and all the chinese kids growing up here, whose parents are just as flabby in  mind, body and spirit. no wonder!
    YUCK

Honey, how are you?  I really love you for your passionate character!  Please stay "vocal, judgmental, harsh & terrifying.." (he he)
Here comes my warm greetings to you and your beloved son for the new year!

Yeah...I've heard the atrocities of parenting in Hong Kong but I've always chuckled and laugh upon it.  My opinions changed when I saw it with my very own eyes.  I was in Hong Kong for the last 5 weeks.  I went to the MTR as usual last week and I saw 10 year old punk being extremely rude to his mother.  He was on the cell phone and rudely shouts at his mother.  I clenched my fists, almost wanting to beat the living shit out of him because he behaved no different from a triad thug.  Then I see him trying to apologize to her desperately and it was his mom's turn to be pissed.  And the mother has every right to be pissed.

Then, there's my little cousins.  They're good kids overall but their mother is extremely strict and it's not in a good way.  They have no time to play, television is strictly banned for those poor kids and I even heard her say that when they reach their teenage years, they are not allowed to go out to any Christmas parties with friends.  I actually had to talk to my aunt in regards to that comment but she seems to shrug it off.  My cousins are good girls for now but I know (having been to that stage before) that they are going to rebel and not in a good way.  It will be brutal.

In contrast to my aunt's boot camp style nurturing, my other 2 cousins (same age as the other 2) aren't in a strict upbringing.  Their parents actually encourage and they actually let them watch TV.  Hell, they are even top A students in Hong Kong.  As great as it sounds, I feel a sense of arrogance from them.

It sounds very hard to raise a child in a  proper mindset these days especially in Hong Kong.

Honestly and sadly, it doesn't only happen in HK but everywhere! Kids' lives now just consist of finger exercises, on the keyboard! The opticians are so gonna love the increase in business yeah?

now you're picking on 8 year olds? :-O

    j/k!

i understand what you're saying.  i see a lot of these chubby, geeky kids running around nowadays in HK.   its very similar to the Mainland with those spoiled 'one child policy' kids, but without the legal justification. :-P
