i was at an audition and was told to come back and read with the director in an hour after an initial reading with the casting director. i walked out of the office and followed my google maps to the nearest starbucks. before even making it to the end of the block, an object on the floor caught my eye. i kneeled down to get a closer look and instantly a flood of thoughts and emotions filled me up. my heart was heavy as i gazed at this creature who i imagined spent its life flying "free as a bird" as the saying goes, now lying on the concrete lifeless and alone. at the same time, in its absolute stillness, i was mesmerized as i was able to appreciate the detail and true beauty of it's design. after about five minutes of being lost in my own thoughts, i got up and continued on my way. no more than ten steps away, i turned around. i scooped it up gently with my script sides and carried it over to a dirt area i saw on the side of a building. i remembered that in my book bag, i had a leftover salad. i took it out, opened the plastic container and removed the plastic spork. using it as a mini shovel, i dug a bit of dirt up and slid the bird in. conveniently within reach, i plucked a small flower and planted it in the final resting place. at that point, all i could think of saying was "farewell..." in the end, i went back and read with the director and it was an overall great experience. i feel good and gave it my all effort wise, but definitely not holding my breath waiting for the callback cause that's how auditions work for the most part. i suppose that's how life works. we fly. we fall. life goes on.
