CHRIS BANGLE/BMW.

"It's not where you're from. It's where you want to go." Imagine you are born in Ravenna, Ohio. Then raised in Wausau, Wisconsin. After considering becoming a Methodist minister, you decide to attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, to pursue a possible career as an automobile designer. And less than 40 years later you are responsible for this:

Chris Bangle is that person. He became the first American chief of design of BMW in 1992, where he designed the Z9 Gran Turismo concept car. His styling themes have generated intense controversy among automotive designers, and have often had a polarizing effect. Bangle's designs are incorporated in the entire BMW lineup, including the 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 series as well as the X3, X5, and X6 SUVs. The designs have caused widespread controversy and have divided BMW enthusiasts who either love them or hate them. (I love!) His designs have also influenced other car makers. The most controversial of his work was the E65 7 Series, a sharp contrast to the preceding E38 generation which was conservatively styled. Time Magazine named it as one of the 50 Worst Cars of All Time...a true mark of success for a designer.

This February, Bangle announced that he was to quit both his position at BMW and the auto industry altogether, to focus on his own design-related endeavours. I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next!

Chris Bangleがその人です。1992年にアメリカ人としてはじめてのＢＭＷデザインチーフになり、Z9 Gran Turismoのコンセプトカーをデザインしました。彼のスタイリングテーマは自動車デザイナーの間でたくさんの論争を巻き起こし業界を二極間に分けたことも多くありました。Bangle氏のデザインはBMWのラインアップ全てに取り入れられていて、1，3，5，6，7のシリーズだけでなくX3、X5、とX6のSUVにも取り入れられています。これらのデザインは多くの論議を呼び、BMW愛好者は大好きか、大嫌いかと二極に分かれます。(僕は大好き！）彼のデザインはほかの自動車メーカーにも影響しています。最も物議を醸した作品はE65 7シリーズで、控えめな前シリーズのE38世代とはまるっきり違うものでした。Time Magazineはこれをこの世で最低な50台の車にも選びました。。。デザイナーとしては真の成功の証。

今年の2月、BangleはBMWと自動車業界からの辞意と自身のデザイン関連の試みに集中すると発表しました。僕は彼のこれからの活躍を楽しみにしています。
