The Water Horse/Loch Ness Monster

I saw The Water Horse: Legend of the Deepfilm today. I had to see it to compare it to a project i worked on, a short film called The Loch Ness Monster. I scored it several years ago for my good friend and director of the film, Benjamin Williams. He had created a feature length scrīpt based on the short film and was hoping to make a feature Loch Ness Monster film someday, but unfortunately someone beat us to it with The Water Horse, which is based on a book.

So I'm disappointed I won't get to expand on my score for the Loch Ness Monster and make the definitive Loch Ness Monster movie with my buddy Benjamin. But I did really enjoy watching The Water Horse. They did a really great job creating a good story out of the Loch Ness Legend, and there were some fun sequences to watch. Both films are about a boy who befriends the sea monster, basically like E.T. but with the Loch Ness Monster instead of an alien. Trivia: One of the actresses in our film is Dee Wallace who played the mother in E.T.

There were a few similarities between the two films, including a nearly identical shot of Castle Urquhart, a famous castle that overlooks Loch Ness. They must have placed their camera in almost the same spot. I'm glad we made our film in 2004, or we'd be accused of ripping off The Water Horse.

Not the photo from the film, but an image of Castle Urquhart I found online

Watch this video, and you can hear an excerpt from my Loch Ness Monster score below, see a montage of scenes from the short film (You'll notice Dee Wallace right at the end of the montage), and take a look at behind the scenes at the scoring session.
