I wouldn’t say Ghost In The Shell is an example of whitewashing in as much is it is an example of the American condition. We as Americans are a results based society, we always have to win, to be number one, the short term being more important than the long term. Very few of us are fighting for the long term sustainability of our country. The short game is easier, more predictable, you get measurable results but it also has it’s many short comings. Look at MMA and it’s rise in America, don’t get me wrong, I love it but it has helped reduce age old beautiful martial arts systems into acts of brawling inside a cage. A champion fighter retires around 35, takes all that money and retires into a world of brain damage and pain management. The martial arts are supposed to be something you can practice far into old age but not in the MMA of the good old US of A! So is GITS wrong for wanting to make as much money as they could by putting one of the biggest current superstars in the world as it’s lead? If I was producing a Chinese movie and Sj was interested I would do my damndest to make her fit. If we didn’t care about profits, there would be a lot less Iron Men out there a maybe a few more Apocalypse Nows. Whitewashing is what happens when we choose the easy way out. Sj was cast because she is a global superstar and has the clout to carry a $110M movie. So the simple choice was made. Choose the person that will give the biggest returns on this property. If Zoe Saldana was the star dujour, I’m sure she would have been cast and this would be a different conversation. If Rinko Kikuchi could sell a $110M movie then this conversation would been a moot point. And that’s what bothers me most. Why aren’t there Asian stars big enough to fill this roll?
