The last time I was in South Africa for my wedding I met A couple Gary and Andrea who were also married by Monica the Sangoma. They were very interested in why we wanted to be married by Monica as not many people went though that ceremony with her. As we got to know them we found that they were actually doing volunteer work in Lesotho, which is a small country within the country of South Africa. They were working in a village called Phelisanong where a woman named Mamello had set up a place for physically and mentally handicapped children. In rural Africa, people with disabilities are often seen as a burden or useless to their families and communities and are often abandoned. Mamello being physically handicapped herself wanted to make a place where these people would be welcomed and cared for with open arms. In the few short years that she has been doing this she has built a large self sustaining community and has even grown to help people with HIV/AIDS, one of Africa's biggest problems. It really is amazing what her will has enabled her to do. With all the odds against her she persevered and created this place of happiness for kids who really didn't have a place or a future. Now they do. Mamello inspires me, I hope she inspires you too. Thanks to Gary and Andrea for making this film and documenting the amazing things that she has done. Next time I'm in South Africa, I will defintely pay Mamello and the children of Phelisanong a visit.

Christopher and Michael are two boys that have benefited from what Mamello has done. It's amazing to me that these boys with cerebral palsy have learned everything they know about the world from the internet and television and have probably very rarely ever left the rural area of which they are from. I am also glad to see that they realize a Lamborghini in Lesotho would not be that entirely practical.

I have met many people from Africa and they are such lovely people. Africa has a long and difficult history and only in recent decade or so come into it's own identity . There is still much to do and much help that is needed within itself. It's wonderful to know that the people themselves are making such an effort to help themselves. The country will get better with time. I wish them all success and I will do what I can to help should there be a need.

Be brave enought to do the right thing, which hears totally right. But reality is ......,hard to say.  When I saw a disabled child who was controlled to beg for money, I felt extremely sad, however, I'm not brave enought to save her, dread of forces of darkness behind her. When I encountered an old man fell over himself ,I hesitated for a while ,still dared not to help him. Afterall, there were too many reports about making a false countercharge. The helper was insteadly said to be the bumbler. When  china encounter WenChuan earthquake, we all contribute money without protest. But many childern in WenChuan still couldn't go to school, where is our money? We donated blood, but there were doctors who used our blood to cultivate their flowers!Too common, only keep kindness in mind, never hurt others.

usually december is the month where many actions are done, cause its the last month of the year and well its school holidays. and since i have the whole month of not having to work and still get paid, i was really looking into doing some volunteer work. but alas, nobody or organisation is willing to take my offer to help. and i wonder why???
then looking at oversea opportunities to help, i discovered that its not cheap, they charge you for your trip (air ticket, meals and stay), and since that, i wonder if it is possible to organise an event for getting volunteers together and work on a project and contribute to the community. it would be possible for you as you have the calling power. or whoever may read this. it would be meaningful to put thoughts into actions. actions speak louder than words. it would be real life experieces and opportunities for all those out there who is willing to volunteer to service the society.

Maestro, the world doesn't necessarily need heroes, although Mamello is a hero to me, we just need more people to be brave enough to do the right thing. It doesn't have to be big it can be little. Little raindrops can create a pond, a lake and eventually an ocean. Especially when everyone is doing the right thing.

inspiring!  most of us can't GIVE that much, can't do such great things, but let's give and do what we can, and believe that with all these efforts, great or trivial, this little world of ours will be better...

I once always thought that the world doesn't need a hero.  After reading and witnessing so many real stories..the world does need some heroes to maintain the balance.

its quite daunting,  they start with disabled children, then include orphans, then tackle AIDS...   for most people it would be too overwhelming.  Very impressive that they can give so much.

we have a term in education for them called the special needs. its better than being called handicapped or disable. special needs covers a whole more wider spectrum and it is a social issue. all over the world. it definitely take special peopel to come forward to help them and give them lots of care and love. it is amazing that in afica, one woman can achieve this. it is very brave and tons of determination from her. i am inspired by her effort. hope that you would be able to do something to help her and the children there.
