time space continuum

6am. Can't sleep. Figured instead of trying I might as well stay up and wait for the Laker game. It's totally unlike me to not have blogged about basketball the last few days. But well, there's a first for everything.

I received a facebook invite two nights ago about my high school's 10 year reunion. Even though I thought it was odd that the invite was sent out so early (I graudated in 2000) I RSVPed immediately because I had always looked forward to the 10 year reunion, dating back to maybe 2nd year out of high s...Read more

outliers

In his best selling novel Outliers, Malcom Gladwell noted that "the biggest misconception about success is that we do it solely on our smarts, ambition, hustle and hard work."

I think the biggest misconception about success is that it is defined solely by superficial things like money and status.

Re-watched The Wrestler last night. Not by choice—last thing I wanted to see last night was a supposedly depressing movie. But you know what? It’s not a depressing movie, the ending isn’t sad. Sure, his daughter hates his guts, his...Read more

eye of the tiger

A fellow alivenotdead blogger, Mr Hong Kong Honestly, told me a few entries ago that as much as I like to use Rocky as a metaphor for life, it's not realistic because Rocky is a movie and everything isn't so idealistic.

I challenge him, and all of you out there to watch this training montage from Rocky 2.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVdbuNpsryI I dare you to watch this and not get chills up your spine. If you watch this and have no sud...Read more

Waterloo Sunset

So every week or so I’ll spend 30 mins to an hour hanging with two cool British cats around the streets of SoHo. We don’t do much—just sit on the curb and catch up.

Last week, one of them was going off about how British writers are the best and the week before he was saying how British TV is the best.

I don’t know about writing and TV, but the Britis are the best at music though. They're the best at rock and roll and as Jack Black once said, a good rock and roll show can change the world.

Well, maybe not THE world....Read more

doing fifty five in the fifty fo'

I have my headphones on at work at all times. It doesn’t affect me when I’m writing (listening to The Who’s The Kids Are Alright right now as I’m typing this) but I have trouble reading and listening to music at the same time. I figured it’s either because my brain is trying too hard to decipher Thom York’s manic lyrics or I’m just a bit slow.

Then I read “In Defense of Distraction” (thanks to Ms Yin’s recommendation) and this part seems to explain it:

“Over the last twenty years, Meyer and a host of othe...Read more

breakout

A few entries ago I wrote about my rock and roll friend Mike Liu and how we recorded a punk/ska song a few years back. Well after some digging through the old computer, here it is.

This song was the product of one summer afternoon. We had spent all afternoon playing cover songs (mostly Green Day and No Doubt) when Mike suddenly picked up a pen and paper and wrote this in under 3 minutes. We then spent an hour recording. Well, Mike finished his guitar part in 10 minutes, but the rest of us kept messing up during recording we each had like 7 t...Read more

they're making up for my lack of artist-ness

I feel embarrassed sometimes blogging on here because I'm listed as an official artist but I'm not one.

To make up for it, I'll write about my two friends from LA, cool cats I've known since high school--they're true artists.

The first is Victor Chi ( check his IMDB here). He's an aspiring actor hailing from Alhambra, California. You can see his work in several indie flicks as well as small roles in Pirate...Read more

don't assume. because you make an ASS out of U and ME.

So there's this girl who interned with us. She's a bit of a social butterfly and overly dramatic. Most of us at the office took everything she said with a grain of salt. I never took her seriously... not that I dislike her--far from it. I just thought of her as this young lost girl who craves attention and has alot of growing up to do.

She'll leave these blatantly attention seeking status or notes on facebook and I'll usually roll my eyes or leave a sarcastic comment just caus...Read more

outsider

I like headphones.

I think I like what it takes away  (the outside world) more than what it brings me (music)

It's not so much about what's going into my ears, it's what isn't going in that makes me love the headphones.
