保羅韋浩雲：鐵血武士、本能

絕對不能輕視保羅韋浩雲電影裡的女人，當你以為女主角是弱質女子，是等待男人拯救的美人，是美艷不可方物的慾望對象，她們卻往往把男人控制於股掌之上。早在《烈女本色》伊莎貝雨蓓叫人拍案叫絕的精彩演出之前，韋浩雲第一部英語長片《鐵血武士》已由珍妮花積遜李化身亂世求生的蛇蠍美人，話題作《本能》的莎朗史東更是深不可測，助韋浩雲貫徹其爭議本色，玩轉性別政治。

在10月12日的映後談中，李焯桃談到《烈女本色》以強姦為題材，卻拍成一部別開生面的黑色喜劇，盡顯韋浩雲的藝高人膽大及百無禁忌的作風。女主角被強姦卻不當受害者，亦非以暴易暴的復仇者，卻自有其一套應對之道，伊莎貝雨蓓的演出可謂出神入化。

Paul Verhoeven: FLESH+BLOOD and BASIC INSTINCT

Don't ever underestimate the women in Paul Verhoeven's films. His female protagonists might seem vulnerable and weak at first, but these strong women would always manipulate men using their natural instincts rather than react in a predictable way. Before Isabelle Huppert's superb performance in ELLE, Jennifer Jason Leigh has already demonstrated how a woman can survive under extreme circumstances in FLESH+BLOOD, and Sharon Stone has shown how she could be mean and diabolical in BASIC INSTINCT.

In the post-screening talk of ELLE on 12 Oct, critic Li Cheuk-to talked about how the uninhibited and daring Paul Verhoeven has turned the film into a rape comedy. In the film, Isabelle Huppert is being violently raped but she refuses the role of victim or avenger, and translates the experience into something she can control. Violence simply challenges her to raise her game.
