銀幕再現：驚天大陰謀、竊聽大陰謀

美國大選剛剛落幕，現在重溫兩部七十年代的「陰謀」電影，正合時宜。1972年的美國大選，爆出「水門事件」，有人潛入水門大廈民主黨總部進行竊聽，調查矛頭直指成功連任的尼克遜總統，最終令他在任期屆滿前黯然下台。揭破事件真相的調查報道大作《驚天大陰謀》出版，由兩名《華盛頓郵報》記者鍥而不捨的追查，翻出事件始末。電影版就由羅拔烈福與德斯汀荷夫曼主演，把堅持不懈的抗爭精神，活現於銀幕之上。

哥普拉的《竊聽大陰謀》推出之時，亦正值「水門事件」醜聞曝光，雖並非直接指涉，觀眾仍少不免浮想聯翩。真赫曼飾演竊聽專家，揭開一個再沒私隱的年代，人們如何相處自處的思慮，在這個後斯諾登年代一點也沒有過時。當年於康城影展摘下最佳電影金棕櫚大獎，在奧斯卡亦僅負於哥普拉自己的《教父續集》，肯定是被低估的傳世之作。

Back to the Screen: ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and THE CONVERSATION

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for Oval Office, it might be the best time to revisit classic political thrillers about the greatest scandals in America. Alan J. Pakula's ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is a story about the inevitable intertwining of politics and media, where two journalists investigate the Watergate scandal for the Washington Post. The film shows that the amoral, win-at-all-costs philosophy that brought Trump to his presidency was once so shocking that it costs a president his job.

Francis Ford Coppola's THE CONVERSATION may be the best exploration of the dangers of surveillance that film has ever produced. Surveillance expert Harry Caul getting involved when he suspects that by taping a conversation between two illicit lovers, he has made them the target of a murder plot. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and losing out to Coppola's own THE GODFATHER: PART II for Best Picture at the Oscars, but it remains as relevant as ever in this post-Snowden era.
