This week at the HKIFF, the director Kim Soo-hyun brought his latest film, #BeatenBlackandBlue, a politically charged black comedy exploring the sometimes violent war of words and ideas between conservative and liberal factions fighting for the soul of South Korea. The story centers on two men—one a youth and the other an elderly anti-communist zealot, both fervently right-wing—who bond in their passionate protests against their fellow citizens sympathizing with North Korea. The young man Gyo-hwan routinely uses the internet to troll political adversaries.
