Yet, Bresson is able to transmogrify the stories into a pilgrimage of salvation and redemption. We see a young woman hold firm on the purity of her belief despite suffering from torture in THE TRIAL OF JOAN OF ARC, and a man's perseverance in seeking to break free from a Nazi prison in A MAN ESCAPED. In Bresson's hands, saints and sinners are stripped of myth but imbued with new power.
