Old Guitar Project: The Woody 5150

In 2007 (before I started blogging) I undertook a project that in retrospect was nearly as insane as the Dan Armstrong project. I thought you might like to see the photos I have and find out how I did it.

============================================

One of my favorite guitarists is Eddie Van Halen.

One of the guitars he is known for was a...Read more

Movie Review: Diva/華麗之後

A veteran singer questions her life and career.

“Was it really worth my mom and I double-teaming[ed: name removed so I stay alive] ?”

A young, aspiring singer wants to become successful, but is unsure what (and who) she would give up to get there.

Movie Review: Vulgaria/低俗喜劇

I had heard about this movie for a long time, and I was looking forward to seeing it for a lot of reasons:

1. Pang Ho Cheung is one of my favorite directors.

2. Category III movies are rare birds these days.

3. It promised to be a memorable film.

And it certainly is.

A movie about ma...Read more

Dan Armstrong Replica Part 6

Well, let’s wrap this up.

Har har har.

As noted in my last entry, I am making the pickup for this guitar. My reasoning is that the original pickup is very distinct in appearance, so I would have to build the outside anyway, and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at winding pickups (hence building the winder), so why not?

Once you have all the machinery and parts in place, the actual process is fairly straightforward.

Dan Armstrong Replica Part 5

Sorry for the delay in updates.

I have been quite pleasantly surprised by this project, which is a testament to either my notable guitar-building skill or my pronounced lack of self-esteem.

Perhaps both.

I’ve never take the easy way out of anything, and habitually choose the more difficult path.  I always said it was just my nature.

My mother always said “You’re f@#$ing retarded.”

Dan Armstrong Replica Part 4

Time to knock the neck out.

We’ve already got the neck blank, which is a 3-piece quartersawn laminate with decorative veneers between the maple.

The headstock angle was cut to 13 degrees on the mitre saw and the neck blank cut from the larger piece.

I needed to mill the back of the headstock to get it to the proper thickness as well as make it parallel to the front, flat, and smooth.

Movie Review: Motorway/車手

 Bad Boys III

I had heard good things about Motorway/車手, so naturally I was afraid to watch it. Too many movies lately have rewarded my faith, optimism, and dedication with cinematic Read more

Dan Armstrong Replica Part 3

There’s no sense delaying the inevitable. Let’s cut this body out.

In a rare fit of intelligence, I realized (like I did with the Les Paul Jr. build) that I would be better off doing the neck pocket before cutting out the body outline.

That said, I would need to cut out the general area of the neck pocket because of the way it was situated between the horns.

Knowing as I do the limitations of the tools I have (not to mention the limitations of the ...Read more

Dan Armstrong Replica Part 2

Apologies to anyone reading this for my previous inadvertent posting of Parts 5 and 6 (as you saw, they were just blank entries awaiting fulfillment, so to speak).

The first part of this (or any other) project is research. The Internet has made it very easy to find out almost anything, and for this project it was no different.

There are lots of photos of Dan Armstrong guitars, interviews with people who designed and built them, and even an entire website dedicated to the g...Read more

Movie Review: The Bounty/懸紅

誰放屁 ?

I was really looking forward to seeing The Bounty/懸紅.

A rare, ambitious undertaking for Hong Kong, the film is a sprawling, epic re-telling of the 1789 mutiny on board HMS Bounty.

Apparently, no expense was spared in painstakingly recreating the settings, wardrobe, and props.
