    Pflasterspektakel Festival!

One of the most prestigious and well organized street theatre festivals in the world held annually in Linz, Austria.

I was very fortunate to be accepted in Linz last year after the somewhat successful test run of THE OLD GUY in Poland first.

So with the taste of European blood in my mouth, I really looked forward to rocking out in Austria!

There are close to 150 (give or take) individual artists and groups from around the world that come to Linz every year to perform up to 3 shows a day on the street.

    (That's ME!)

All of us are assigned a number that puts each of us in line to pick which spots or "pitches" we would be performing that day. Some are good, others great, and most FANTASTIC!

My place of stay, on the other hand...

Accommodations were provided to the artists. Hotels, motels and the like. But for the solo artists and larger groups, they opened up a high school for everyone to crash in.

They gave me the computer closet with a mattress on the floor.

I will never complain about living on a circus train again.

But it's never about the room because I'm too busy doing shows and partying with the artists!

    So again... SHOWTIME!

The first day parade, ALWAYS FUN!

The crowds were huge during those three days. Though we did experience a day of rain where the streets cleared off. And that's never good for a STREET festival

    Pre Rain

    Post Rain

Once the rain did stop, it was time to show them what Rob Lok's all about!

Overall, great times over in Linz. I'm heading back the end of July this year. Really looking forward to catching up with old friends and meeting new!

    Good night!

  • Vodka and Me

    Tuesday, Jun 28, 2011 12:22PM / Standard Entry

So after Chuncheon Mime Festival, I headed out to Poland for a four city tour..

Kalisz, Brzeg, Wroclaw and Zielona Gora..

Please oh Please, never ask me to pronounce them for you since I managed to butcher it repeatedly during my stay there

And it was all about BUSKERBUS!

Okay now...here's where it becomes a challenge..

Not only am I bringing an untested show on the street. This time I actually get to pass the hat!

geez...I wish somebody would have told me that Poland had the zlotky and not the Euro.
So instead of raking in all those European moolah...I settled on drinking lots and lots of vodka

I mean, C'mon, where else can I party with some dude with his boner hanging out?!

    (bwhahahahahah...ehh sorry)

The basic schedule sort of went like this....

Check into each city... Priority One: Clean Clothes

So with a tennis ball in the sink and a dirty piece of rope...Voila!

Next up: Let's do some shows!

    And then.. THE HANG!

The great things about my tour with the BuskerBus family were the improvised music/ performing jams..

The awesome artists from around the world

The patient volunteers and kick-ass festival bars..

    All of it!

Yep, going to try to head back this August but I may be back in South Korea then..

Too bad, I was hoping to meet my drunk audience volunteer again that decided to get freaky with me during my set in Wroclaw..

This blog entry is for you, pal!

oh, why not, this guy as well..

(chalk sign courtesy of Shiva, the pigeon chaser..one of the best street acts I've seen in years!)

  • Chuncheon International Mime Festival

    Monday, Jun 27, 2011 11:36PM / Standard Entry

Now I have been touring all over the place since 1996 with one project or another.

But last year was my first year to hit the street festival circuit specifically with my show THE OLD GUY.

The illustrious Chuncheon International Mime Festival held every May in South Korea

For those unfamiliar with how a festival works, be it street, stage or circus, it all begins with the home base

This is where you would sit down, talk schedule, artists and get paid. This is also where, if the organizers are feeling a bit generous, you can pick up a snack or two.

And then the foundation of all good festivals, THE VOLUNTEERS!!

Every artist is assigned a personal translator/ city guide. Most of them were students from the local university.

I had the awesome Wonheeeeeeeeee! (Extra vowels courtesy of the writer)

Not only do they help you find great food, tasty drinks, communicate with other staff...apparently they can dance like maniacs as well

Here they were doing the CIMF dance!

    Some of the artists

    The Collaboration

There was some sort of battle that takes place between all the jugglers in the festival so I was involved as well (though I'm really not much of a juggler)

So we spent a few hours rehearsing for the show.

It's nice to see that no matter what part of the world that I'm in, performers love their trunks and vintage cases!

  • Being King on STAR KING!

    Sunday, Aug 22, 2010 3:57AM / Standard Entry

Here's my act on Star King, the popular South Korean variety show.

Well, it really wasn't my act since the producers wanted bits and pieces of it and they also wanted me to incorporate a lot of the celebrities on there.

So consider it a MTV quick cut version of Rob's stilt routine with a bit of mindless comedy thrown in.

I was hoping for better footage but the producers of the show didn't send me the file yet.

    Enjoy the online video!

First Video: My act begins around the 2:10 mark

Finishing up with the second video:

Sorry, no translation on the Korean. Any help?
